It's now very clear that JD Vance is consciously taking on the role of putting a softer face on Stephen Miller's fascism. Vance is becoming chief propagandist for ICE's violent paramilitary warfare against Americans.

Some thoughts on that in this piece:

If ICE truly were targeting "the worst of the worst" and not, you know, deliberately brutalizing innocent families with children, they'd rush to correct all the stories like this one, apologizing and insisting it's not what they're really doing.

They don't because this is deliberate. This is it.
The parents of a 7 year old, all of whom are in the process of applying for asylum, took their daughter to the ER when her nose wouldn't stop bleeding. ICE picked them up near the hospital and they are now in detention in Texas, presumably awaiting deportation. www.oregonlive.com/portland/202...

On his trip to MN yesterday, Vance said DHS wasn’t targeting people based on race.

Not only is that false, remember, this Admin took a case to SCOTUS specifically arguing they should be allowed to do that.

Trump’s SCOTUS ruled in their favor.

Don't be fooled by their lies.

If every Democrat voted NO on funding ICE, it would not have passed the House. But, 7 House Democrats voted to fund Trump's lawless, masked goons, so it passed.

Hakeem Jeffries refused to whip his members to vote against ICE funding. Genuinely unforgivable.
NEW: DHS appropriations bill funding ICE passes 220-207

7 Democrats voted YES on the bill:
- Jared Golden
- Marie Gluesenkamp Perez

- Tom Suozzi
- Laura Gillen
- Don Davis
- Vicente Gonzalez

One Republican voted NO: Thomas Massie

Since there are a lot of people insisting that protests don't matter and the Trumpists can simply ignore public opinion: I just wrote about why this idea that authoritarian regimes are impervious to public pressure is very wrong and basically just perpetuates the regime's assertion of inevitability:

Trump’s authoritarian desires are boundless. But the past year proves that his ability to impose them on America is not.

If you followed the history of Nazi diplomacy in the years before the outbreak of WWII, it was filled with rhetoric exactly like what we are hearing from Lutnick, Bessent and Trump at Davos—lots of purely gratuitous insults. This isn't actually diplomacy, it's more like a promise of conflict.

One thing that people don't understand is that the community base opposing ICE is extremely committed to avoiding anything that could trigger rioting, I think largely because of the 2020 experience. Trump thinks he can redo 2020 but shoot the protesters this time, but Minneapolis isn't the same.
Ironically a lot of the base of Minnesota's activitists' response was laid as a result of the riots following Chauvin's murder of George Floyd. That's part of why I feel like this administration doesn't understand who they're messing with. The Twin Cities got organized in 2020 and remains so.
