There is NO FUCKING EXCUSE for this to be happening.

I had a baby die in my arms of pertussis some fifty years ago. It was a HORRIBLE death. But my fellow nurses said to me, "It's almost stamped out now, they're all getting the shots, we won't be seeing this again."

HOW THE FUCK ARE WE HERE. 😡
A third infant has died in Kentucky, KYDPH adds:

“These are Kentucky’s first pertussis deaths since 2018. None of the infants nor their mothers received the recommended pertussis vaccinations during pregnancy or early infancy.”

All of this thread. I love public transit. I'd use it more, except that there literally is no public transit where I live. I could not go anywhere, never mind do my job, without a car. It's simply not possible.
I am super-pro-public transit, and use it way more than the average American, but I live near a light rail station with very, very stable and predictable scheduling, and even then I would not use it for many things I use a car for because the cost of transit is time.
i wonder how much of Americans' views on driving vs. transit would change if they had to pay for gas/insurance/etc every time they turned on the engine

"i'm not paying $5 to take the train to work twice a day when i can just drive" is a genuine opinion held by so many people

Goddess, sing the rage of Charlie Brown,
Destructive, how it gave the Achaeans endless pain
And send many brave souls of heroes to Hades—
And it made them food for the dogs
And all the birds as Zeus plan was being fulfilled.
Know, oh Charlie Brown, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars
Witness me, Charlie Brown

This weekend's laundry/treadmill movie was Blue Beetle, a story about how Miguel Torres, after winning the Sekai Taikai, finished college and came home to become a superhero.

I joke, kinda.

Anyway, it's a fun movie.

here's a grim little question for a Sunday afternoon! does anyone know stories from antiquity of folks being forced to swallow molten lead? (martyrs or civilians). i know the stories of Crassus and Valerian and molten gold; any lead-based stories come to mind?

Sure, okay, why not?

In the year 2016, I was a bit adrift; my chosen career path wasn't going anywhere. I was more miserable than I would admit. I was also a largely stay at home parent with two very young kids.

Also, there was a presidential election that year.
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

My knowledge of colors is not sophisticated enough for this game.

Hey fellas, looking for good fantasy content NOT made by bigots?

- The Owl House
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians
- Little Witch Academia
- Earthsea books
- Discworld books
- Children of Blood and Bone
HBO CEO Casey Bloys says 'HARRY POTTER' Season 2 is already being written

"We’re going to do whatever we can to not have a huge gap, for the kids, obviously, but also for viewers"

As someone who grew up hearing this, and not to my benefit, I have a whole ass rant about this.
“You can be whatever you want to be when you grow up!”, so damaging to so many folks (and we’re all living in the wreckage)

My thoughts on the big political news of the night.
a pixelated image of a man with a mustache and the words well

Ended up watching Stardust for a family movie night, and while Neil
Gaiman remains a piece of shit, the movie is genuinely fun.

It is also bizarre seeing young Daredevil and young Superman beefing over a lady, but it was an earlier age.

One of the perks of throwing myself into a legal research rabbit hole is occasionally you stumbling across a real banger, like this one:

The police and the public may wonder why the end product of a hunch, sharpened by experience, should be undone by what the media like to call “a technicality.”

If you're wondering "why does the legal system move so slowly?" consider that I spent two hours in court this morning so that I could do a five minute status conference and pick a hearing date.

It wasn't anyone's fault. But the DA had to be in another courtroom. Some cases got called ahead of ours

Goddamn it people.

Shut the fuck up Friday (which is every day) also includes the corollary "don't post videos of crimes on Al Gore's internet."

Seriously. I don't care if you think it's a funny crime. It's still a crime. Stop it.

This x1000.

So, @50501movement.bsky.social posted a grossly antisemitic video, and when called on, decided to start blocking folks and deleting replies. They eventually deleted the offending post, without any acknowledgement or apology.

So, fuck those guys, I guess.
50501 is hiding the replies that are pointing out that this is an antisemitic conspiracy theory. What's being described here is the exact same type of donation ask I get from Democratic electeds and groups like EMILY'S List, SPLC, and ACLU multiple times a day. It's not shady. It's typical.

It wouldn't be okay if Trump and ICE were doing this shit to "criminals" either.

You don't lose your humanity because you did something that society decided was proscribed, particularly given that a majority of those things are entirely arbitrary. Most crimes are poverty driven, not violent.

As someone who does criminal defense work for a living, and has a long list of problems with the US criminal legal system, including the way it handles sex offenses, I gotta say....I think the system mighta got it right with this one.

Absolutely not, no. I would not even try, because I would likely end up seriously injured or dead.

I would submit that this is true for 99% of people on this platform. Professional athletes are in another world.
If you had 4 tries to run for a first down in the NFL and you win $10 mil …. Would you be able to do it?? (You can choose your offensive line)
