Elon Musk, once hailed as a “climate hero” for building his fortune on clean technology, has found an unlikely ally in his efforts: Big Coal. Joe Craft, billionaire CEO of the coal mining giant Alliance Resource Partners, has emerged as one of the top donors to Musk’s America PAC.

Imagine if the only practical way of getting packages was to pay an exorbitant monthly fee to Amazon, except when you actually need a package they deny it 30 percent of the time because they deem you don't need the item, and when they do deliver it, they charge you an unknowable random amount. 1/2

The NYTimes says it’s “unclear what motivated the [UHC Healthcare CEO’s] killing or whether it was tied to Mr. Thompson’s work in the industry.”

The shooter wrote “deny, defend, depose” on the bullets and shot him walking into an investor meeting. Seems pretty clear to me!

CANADIAN Version of this series would have been boring. Man gets cancer... Man goes to Dr. because they have universal healthcare. The End.

The other day I was pitching our Gilded Age course to undergrads:

“Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a nation where the wealthy had insane power and ordinary people were reoeatedly crushed by them until they lashed out in anger?”
journalists really should have a gilded age/progressive era historian on speed dial for the next few years. it will help a lot!

Remember last year’s Spotify Wrapped with the deep dives into city stats and those clever blurbs that made you feel like an anthropologist of your own listening habits? This year feels like it was slapped together by ChatGPT after two Red Bulls. The layoffs are showing, and the charm is fading.

One of the points I stressed in Partisans is how vital non-conservative media were to laundering right-wing commentators’ views: James Kilpatrick on 60 Minutes, Pat Buchanan on CNN/PBS/MSNBC, Tucker Carlson on CNN/MSNBC, Glenn Beck on CNN. Right-wing media matter, but aren’t the whole story.
In 1992 conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer described his fellow conservative, Pat Buchanan a "fascist." William F. Buckley criticized Pat for his antisemitism in that same year. And yet for decades right wing populist Pat got primo television gigs representing "the conservative viewpoint."
