Hello to all of my new followers and those who already follow me from the ‘other place’!
I’m a freelance, part time videogame QA, specialising in narrative adventures, but willing to test any genre!
I’m also an #accessibility advocate.

Here’s a great example of why it's best to think about, implement and code in #accessibility to your game as soon as possible, rather than at beta or later.
#NoMansSky launched in 2016 with tiny UI & game text. 18 months ago (iirc) they added size adjustment. Unfortunately it breaks the game a bit:
Cropped screenshot showing accessibility settings, including HUD Scale (set at maximum 150%) and Enlarged UI Text (set at Enabled). Screenshot showing a base building and editing view, with a fairly small UI menu near the top of the screen showing the various controls and button commands Screenshot showing the same base building and editing view, but because the HUD and UI text is enlarged, the menu is now almost completely off screen at top-left, making it useless.

Automatic controller detection and button remapping, just by plugging it in, even mid-game 😎

This controller support stuff is hard to test as an indie dev, so we'll have to see how it goes when it's public.

Also I haven't got a DualShock to test yet...

Seems to me that the fact that interested people can’t find games they find interesting and maybe don’t even know they exist is (a) obvs true so dunking on it is dumb and (b) a massive fucking problem for the artform that the corporate sector of the industry has no interest *at all* in solving

Moira from A Highland Song

Moira is a sassy, funny, brave and very determined young woman. She is on a journey to not only find her uncle but also herself. She travels through miles of dangerous wilderness but doesn't miss a beat.
Image of the character Moira from the indie game A Highland Song. She is a teenager girl with light skin, brown eyes and long brown hair tied up in a high ponytail. She is wearing a yellow windbreaker, brown leggings with a brown skirt over the top of them and brown hiking boots. She has a red backpack on her back and she is running across the ground in the Scottish Highlands.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

🧵 Sinister stuff. Jenrick, a Tory leadership candidate, says he didn’t see a White face in an area, & that it looked like a slum. This is a v old racist dog-whistle. Then when challenged on it, he accuses journos of fomenting terrorism. He’s clearly in fascist double-speak mode [1]
bestforbritain.org
Wow. Robert Jenrick doubles down by branding a black journalist's questions "ridiculous" and saying that the problem is not his comments, but "journalists like you who pop up and try to knock me down", adding that "this is the reason why terrorist attacks happen". ~AA

Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I'll understand, I don't and I won't. If you're just trying to troll me, I've seen way worse, i'll restrict and move on. But please, if you've got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough,
, just so
other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it.
Gross. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it 'the future. Al is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.

lots of people know Łink from what he did to promote alt text usage here. this tip about pretending you’re describing an image over the phone has been burned in my brain since i saw it
bluesky post from
@knilirabaj.bsky.social that says

It's pretty cool you're using that alt text accessibility feature. It's not cool that you're not really describing the image though. Nice and simple is a good start. Descriptive and accurate is the way to go. You'll get the hang of it. Try pretending you're describing the picture over the phone.
