We don't need to give ICE agents more training. We need to subject them to rigorous oversight and, when they commit crimes, we need to prosecute them.

I took a whole class in college called "The Poetry of Witness" about poets imprisoned and killed because they chose to bear witness in authoritarian countries. And today the United States produced and extinguished one of its own.
Renee Good was a poet, someone who put beauty out in the world. And now she's gone. And these fascists are still here.

I want us to stay focused on the grief of this terrible moment, but when Black people tell you not to touch something, that is not a challenge. Some things are ours for a reason. We can remember Renee Good as the person she was and the circumstances of her murder without co-opting Black suffering.
“Say her name” is not about allyship. It’s a term crafted for people who are the focus of violence that deliberately erases us. It’s not for her, and it wouldn’t be for her, even if she were Heather Heyer, who didn’t get it when she died for civil rights. Can you understand that?
