Whenever a story uses "blood is thicker than water" I roll my eyes at a writer who either doesn't know or doesn't care that they're mangling the original quote "(the) blood (of the covenant) is thicker than (the) water (of the womb)".
As in: The commitments we enter outweigh those we are born into.
