I was a member of TGA Future Class 2022 and lemmee tell ya, my skin has been crawling since

pretty much every interaction I had with them (few) & story I heard about other members' interactions with them (many) was bad. & by bad I mean, so many shades of being used as photo op tokens & nothing more
EXCLUSIVE on @gamedeveloper.bsky.social: not only has The Game Awards not nominated a Future Class for 2025, it's told alumni it "does not have any active programming plans" for the award.

The Future Class page was taken down sometime this year—eliminating a definitive archive of honorees.
The Game Awards' Future Class program remains on ice
Future Class organizer Emily Weir has informed past honorees that The Game Awards has no active plans for the program.

Do smaller indies/devs still prefer to work in a fixed framerate? It used to be prevalent in my circles. I felt like not many were working with delta timing, which I guess makes more sense if you're actually working at a pixel resolution for the codebase as well

On Saints Row we had a debug npc named Skinballs (lol) that was literally just four spheres wrapped in different shades of skin texture so we could test lighting for different skin tones during development. But teams need to plan for that kind of testing with intentionality, and not enough do.

This will only be bad. I was confused by nonsense text in a Weird Al video and didn’t even realize it could be non-intentional and just upscaling.
The YouTube version of Weird Al’s UHF video has a business name obscured with some distracting (artificial?) digital effect. I pulled out my rip of the video from DVD and you can barely make it out—Thomas somebody? Somebody with lawyers, I guess.

many gamers have this inexplicable urge to yell at people who go against the consensus. i don't need to hear anyone tell me why super metroid is good, i know that already. i want someone to tell me why balan wonderworld is good. bring a little something to the conversation.

A game 'respecting the player's time' has no bearing on objective quality, it's all personal preference.

Microsoft copilot for Excel has a warning not to use it for “business critical” calculations because the answer may not be accurate.

Would someone explain why I might *ever* want to use a spreadsheet where results are unreliable?

This is in the replies and it demonstrates a real issue which is if you find profundity from an AI, you’re responding to something profound a human being wrote that was vacuumed up and what ends up happening is you thank AI and not only don’t thank the person, you have no idea they were involved

Due to a bizarre code interdepency in Super Mario Sunshine, Mario can gain permanent aggression to durians. While normally, he can handle them gently, if Mario enters a sewer and jumps once, he will become incapable of kicking them with anything except full force.

I've been broadly skeptical BF6 for various reasons but apparently it's shipping with a bespoke version of Godot as a user map editor?

That's like, genuinely sick as hell.

I definitely recommend giving characters descriptive filenames like "TutorialLady" or "MainVillain" right off the bat to avoid this inevitability 😆 Worst is when you onboard someone new and have to explain "Filenames before April use Francis, after then it's Didier - good luck"

Oh, another Toy Story related one: The PC port was a slapdash effort done by one programmer who was only given the SNES version graphics. No source code. He had to eyeball everything else and replicate by hand.

Here's his account on the experience.

The games business is about games. If you’re in the games business, and somehow (as often happens) your company somehow is now focused on something else (AI, XR, “IP,” acquisitions, etc.) you’re in for a period of struggle. Everyone will wonder what’s wrong. But you know. It’s about games. Gameplay.
