For today’s #ArtAdventCalendar I’d like to share a mini painting inspired by the Columbia River Gorge.

‘Camassia Quamash’

A perennial herb, native to western N. America in large areas of southern Canada & the northwestern United States. A staple food to First Nations people, & pollinators love it!

Nearly missed day 20 of #ArtAdventCalendar but this Spotted Pardalote has just squeaked in under the wire (UK time). Departed from my usual spalshy wash backgrounds for this one as I really liked the stark contrast between the white and this amazing bird.

From San Jose, California, Monday morning.
A photo of a scarlet red rose, in the process of opening, looking downward and to the left. The petals furthest to the left and right are most open. Tiny dew droplets cover the entire flower, and also the pale yellow, triangular gingko leaf which is lying across the top of the rose. A dark green bud and a few leaves are around, but otherwise the background is filled with gingko leaves on the ground, in varying shades of yellow.

In the spring and fall, during migration, we often get some of the fancy sparrows visiting us.
This Harris’s Sparrow stopped to have a quick drink from the creek before continuing on its journey south.

The wren is the emblem of the Holly King, who reigns over the period of shortening days and is ritually vanquished by the Robin (representing the Oak King or the new, growing sun) at the Winter Solstice to mark the turning of the year and the return of light.

Here's a quite large pastel drawing done sitting on the river bank at Byron's Pool, Trumpington Cambridge. Byron is said to have swum here. Perhaps his anarchic spirit was at work.
