“Men who have no art at all, nothing but wealth— they pit us one against the other, for their gain not ours. We sell ‘em our power. Why do we?
If we went our own way together, we’d do better, maybe.”

- Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Finder”, Tales from Earthsea
Someone edited this into a film still of Doctor Strange using this as his tao mandalas, it was funny & impressive

but I agree with the fans of metric measurements
First saw this on Xtwtter 3 years ago.

Best wishes to all foodies, cooks, & their loved ones this week.

grease floats.

when it flows in sewage and into our plants, it thickens as temps fall, separating in our settling tanks.

the churning water forms grease globs that build like snowballs, and operators remove them so they don’t clog the process.

listen. don’t pour grease down your drains.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

In this painting, the subject reading the Parable of the Sower rests in a field of abundant greenery, suggesting rest as a radical act of resistance in a world that values labor and capital over care.

"Octavia E. Butler’s 1993 novel Parable of the Sower, imagined a future in which California is inhospitable, weather is deadly, wealth disparities are vicious, and a presidential candidate may set the country back 100 years.

It all begins on July 20, 2024."

That is today.

Yes, and there is a podcast called "Octavia Tried to Tell Us".

The guy running for President in her 1993 novel had the slogan, Make American Great Again! I mean.... She KNEW.

But she said she just saw what was happening already and imagine the next 30 years, but too spot on.

This is the only cover of Octavia E. Butler's "Dawn" that I recognize and acknowledge. That one doesn't even make sense in the story.
Lilith, the main character, is Black.

Someone was just saying that science fiction was all xyz, and Octavia Butler is one of many Black sci-fi writers whose storied don't fit that mold. "Bloodchild" pushes the animal-human, male-female, parasite-symbiont divides. It speaks of colonialism.. Aliens resembling insects use humans to breed.

This is why I tell people not to feel embarrassed if they fall for fake images. These are extremely realistic.

Silicon Valley has built a world where creating countless realistic fakes is just two clicks away. You literally can't believe your eyes anymore. And it's only going to get worse.
Content should come with some kind of certificate of authenticity, so that with one click I can know what was modified. Half of what we see is fake, and it's getting harder to decide. My default now is to assume something's fake unless there's objective reason to believe it.

I've seen this image enough now that I feel like I should point out it's fake.
