wasn’t even part of because they couldn’t afford it. Neither him or Gainax proper had much control over the IP outside of software rights and even when Gainax did finally get control in ‘97 they focused on milking the cash cow because they had been severely financially unstable up to that point.

For some context re: the merch and his isolation - at the time of Eva’s production Gainax’s animation division consisted of like 3 guys (one of which was him) and they were siloed away from both the rest of the company, which was mostly doing software, and the production committee, which Gainax

Retro: Setting up a BBS Using Raspberry Pi Zero 2 and Mystic

In the mid to late 90s, I ran a BBS on a Commodore Amiga 1200. It started with 2 disk drives, and I eventually saved enough cash to get an IDE hard drive with a massive 520MB of storage. People from around the world would connect to that BBS on a single 36k modem. About 80 registered users would dial into that BBS on a dedicated phoneline. I ran a Fidonet node that let user of the BBS send electronic messages globally. This was before email and widespread internet access was available. Users would upload games, utilities, and public domain software. There were no adverts. User data was not sold or analysed. There was no manufactured outrage. No algorithm to game. No Likes. Thumbs Up. Impressions or other vanity metrics. It ran on an isolated machine. Screens were designed using ANSI graphics and menu navigation was simple. As I wrote 10 years ago in my final magazine: you have immediate access to decades of games/scans/videos/etc. to make a unique gaming text. You can go bigger than a zine and still make it look cool, and you don't have to make yet another platform/genre catalog. Curate and craft for god's sake

For anyone lamenting how some goon was able to get a publishing deal - put together your own book! Create a solid concept, do some planning, create a design, and pitch it! Most publishers don't have open pitch seasons. They want to see someone that can see a full project to completion.

The February 1999 issue of Jugemu Magazine contains a comic about the career of Koichi Nakamura, which features a lot of cute drawings depicting the history of Chunsoft. I actually used several panels from this comic in my recent video about the company's sound novels.

Some inappropriately creepy golf content - Sente Mini Golf (1986) has DIP switches that add photos of missing children to the attract mode (and to enable a "LOCATED" message per kid). These profiles were replaced with new ones in updated ROMs.

Modern operators seem to leave them on, a lot. 😨

A Reddit post from r/creepygaming by user SuperCamouflageShark - I saw these missing child reports on the attract mode of a Sente Mini-Golf arcade machine recently.

All That Glitters Is Not (Harmony) Gold
Egyptian-born director and producer Farouk “Frank” Agrama had entered the entertainment
industry in 1960, when he served as producer for drama film Hub fi hub. In the years that followed,
Agrama would produce numerous low-budget pictures, including 1972’s The Godfather’s Friend and
1982 B-movie Dawn of the Mummy.130
In the mid-1970s, Agrama added distribution to his repertoire as he began working as a rights
broker between North American studios and Mediatrade, a film mass-media company owned by nowdisgraced
former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. According to The Financial Review,
“Agrama acted as a middleman, buying low from studios such as Paramount or 21st Century Fox and
selling high to Mediaset.”
A few years later, Agrama met a pair of businesswomen from Hong Kong at a trade fair in
Cannes, France. Agrama, along with 131Katherine Hsu May-chun and Paddy Chan, agreed to enter a
partnership to serve as a broker for international film rights.
In 1979, Paddy Chan founded distribution company Harmony Gold in Hong Kong. In 1983,
four years after the foundation of Harmony Gold, Agrama opened his own film and television production
company, Harmony Gold USA.
Not long after Harmony Gold USA’s foundation, the two organizations began to negotiate with
Tatsunoko Productions to acquire the rights to distribute 1982 science fiction anime, The Super
Dimension Fortress Macross.

Agrama, as well as Tatsunoko founders Kenji Yoshida and Ippei Kuri and Tatsunoko executive
Koki Narushima132, negotiated personally for the property, before ultimately coming to a tentative
merchandising deal on January 15, 1984. A formal license to Macross was signed between the Hong
Kong-based Harmony Gold, Ltd. and Tatsunoko on September 11, 1984.133 The finalized granted
Harmony Gold the rights to “present, reproduce, record, publish, release, exhibit, distribute, perform,
broadcast, diffuse, display, market, edit, dub, translate, arrange musically, transform, dramatize and
otherwise adapt and prepare derivative works, based on, advertise, and otherwise dispose of and
exploit the underlying series, and any and all versions, character, stories, setting, titles, music, sound
track and effects, animation, artwork and all other components thereof, using any methods or devices of
exploitation.”134
Harmony Gold would transfer these rights to Agrama’s Harmony Gold USA by the end of
1984.
