I decided to start a #thread 🧵 of stories about legal residents and tourists being (illegally) arrested, detained and/or deported by the Trump regime. I'll only post stories from serious sources, as rumors and conspiracies are really not needed in this authoritarian moment.

I defy Bret Stephens to go to Columbia or Berkeley for one single day. Just an absurd caricature. Turn off your laptop (which is feeding you a handful of extreme, unrepresentative anecdotes) and walk around.

It's remarkable how many journalists don't know what an executive order is. English is not the official language of the US govt any more than it was a week ago. An EO is no more than the President's directive to exec branch officials about what *his* policies and what he directs them to **do**.

Trump’s new exec order making English the only official language of the US—for the first time in its history—is lost in the barrage of other news. Its premise is a lie: the US constitution’s ratification depended on the doc’s translation into German and Dutch

Since the president has signed an EO making English the official language of the United States, here is the first non-English copy of the Declaration of Independence, printed in German just days after July 4, 1776. We have always been multilingual.

I read the EO so you don’t have too. Nothing screams unity like imposing it; nothing screams you care about an issue like executive ordering on Saturday evening.
The executive order making English the official language is out. Putting aside the dubious legality of establishing an official language by fiat, the only thing of substance is revoking Clinton’s EO 13166 mandating language services in federal services.

It was a matter of time. Unlike previous legislative attempts, touted as symbolical, the key thing is exempting federal agencies and federally-funded from language services. Think health, housing, justice, education… www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

Language teachers in the US: it can be hard to think about how to address the fascist take-over. A modest curricular intervención can be pivoting a consumer-based framework (eg buying clothes, dining out, etc) to mutual support and community (clothes and food bank donations, etc) whenever possible
