Threats, hate, and destruction don’t put us on a path to peace - they make us all less safe. In this moment, it is up to us to stand up against hate, lead with kindness, and find a way to draw all our communities closer.

In addition to the events of last night, in the last few months alone, we've witnessed a devastating shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church, a fire and break-in at the Alhikma Islamic Center, and disgusting attacks on our Somali community.

Hate attacks against all faith communities have reached historic highs, and Minnesota is not an exception.

Last night, Temple Israel in Minneapolis was defaced with anti-Semitic hate.

My heart is with the congregants of Temple Israel and our entire Jewish community. Hate has no home in Minnesota, and every house of worship should be a safe place to pray.

JUST IN: The Republican Mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska’s second biggest city, lost re-election last night to a Democrat.

Mayor David Pruhs is a conservative who fought protections for LGBTQ+ residents; he made comments this year drew condemnation this year from Alaska Natives. He lost to Mindy O'Neall.

"Black people are tired. Not metaphorically tired—actually tired. The kind of tired that turns every group chat into a mix of gallows humor and emotional triage."

I write about white ignorance and how exhausting it is to hear white ppl insist "this isn't who we are, when it's ALWAYS who we've been.
White People’s Performative Ignorance Is Exhausting—Opinion
Disbelief over authoritarianism in America isn’t a cutesy personality trait. It’s a confession: You haven’t been paying attention.

"There just isn’t enough time. There’s only what we manage to make of it—what we build, what we protect, what we remember to carry to the car. The gas mask. The snacks. The question we forgot to ask. The name of the person taken." My latest.

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Let’s break it down:

A ruling likely won't come for months and *how* that ruling is written will make a big difference for what happens in CO and states like MN that have bans on the books.

It's disheartening to see hard-fought & important work challenged, but no matter what, there are people ready for the work ahead.

There is going to be a lot of speculation about how the Supreme Court may rule on the conversion "therapy" ban case, but if you're worried:

The best protection against this harmful and discredited practice is *us*. Bans or not, we have tools to educate people about harms and protect the vulnerable.

KBJ’s blunt question today about the Supreme Court’s culture war hypocrisy kind of floored me, because it’s the kind of meta-criticism that we aren’t used to hearing from the justices.

It’s the second day of the term, and things are that dire already. slate.com/news-and-pol...
With One Damning Question, Ketanji Brown Jackson Defined the Supreme Court’s New Term
The justice stripped the veneer of constitutional principle from the court’s latest blatant culture war.

While this letter is focused on the (vanishingly small) trans athletes; it illuminates the much broader effort to erode the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ students and families.

I'm sure not all of these signatoriess share that end goal, but it feeds into that effort.

All kids deserve to be included.
rohnkat.bsky.social
...Lakeville which removed inclusive posters this year, and others that have had big debates on these topics - including at least two who actively sought to remove their schools from the state high school league over inclusive policies - potentially denying *all* athletes the chance to compete.
rohnkat.bsky.social
Amongst the signers, we have St. Francis schools, which had to reverse a book ban policy after legal action from ACLU & EDMN, Anoka-Hennepin which has settled multiple suits and almost shut down its budget over opposition to inclusion policies, Hastings which rolled back its equity policies...

Oh boy. Lots to unpack here.

It's not so much a letter as it is a PR campaign (they have a website: titleixmn.com) to pressure the state in the midst of litigation and policy debate.

The list is a who's-who of districts that have consistently fought against LGBTQ+ protections and topics.

I was the chief author who passed the conversion therapy ban in MN and while doing that, I met many people who experienced the so-called therapy. And I need to be clear, conversion therapy is TORTURE. It is ineffectual torture that we sanction for children. And it's WRONG.

The case, CO notes, is manufactured: No one has filed a complaint against Chiles. The state has not disciplined her. The law is narrow: it bans conversion practices for licensed clinicians with youth patients, but does not impact religious counselors or life coaches or Chiles' speech outside of work
