a line from a movie that plays over and over in my head is Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth saying "Am I to be made of stone? Must I be touched by nothing?" I think of it whenever someone tells me "that was not an appropriate time to laugh," which is a semi-regular occurrence

The line in this courageous essay about her child not remembering her broke my heart. I hope she knows what an impact it had on so many people.

Of course, if economic and social life collapsed, the process might go into reverse, and birth rates could be expected to rise again. But is that really what you want?
For my part, I’m heartily sick of people who think collapse is the answer to anything.

The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

Rob Reiner, for a while there, was one of the most artistically and commercially successful directors in Hollywood. He had a run of films that knocked the roof off. With STAND BY ME, he gave voice to Stephen King’s work that we hadn’t seen since CARRIE and SALEM’S LOT and rarely since.

I hope everyone affected finds some kind of peace.

One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.
