Here's my standing offer, even for folks I don't know. If you want to try Linux I will help you. I will give, freely of my time and do the best I can. If you don't like it we'll shake hands and walk away without any ill will.

Here's my promise: I will NEVER try to convince you to use Linux.
Some days just existing without giving up is all you can manage. That's resistance in and of itself and it's enough. The world is on fire so drink enough water and get enough to eat and figure things out from there. Take care of yourself.

When the question is put to the American people about what is a greater threat to liberty, a sanctimonious policing of language in service of a more polite and inclusive society, or a literal policing of people to make an ethnically homogenous society, the American people always select the former.

Just because it's being passed around a lot: NO, data centers in space do NOT benefit from space being cold. Space is cold in the formal sense we use to define temperature. But it is very bad at cooling. What would you rather have to cool hot metal: a lukewarm water tub or a giant cold atmosphere?

"How can you say you're never voting for Newsom? You're handing the election to the GOP!"

Because I don't vote for Republicans, ever. Newsom is a racist, transphobic, genocide supporting Republican. Ergo, I am not voting for him. Find me someone who isn't a Republican and I'll consider them.

I was working from a hospital today and went outside for a meeting so I didn't bother anyone else. Even using headphones with a mic there's zero reason to bother anyone else with your side of the conversation. Rah is absolutely right about how obnoxious this is.
Four separate people in this waiting room are using laptops or cell phones without headphones. If I get arrested, I'm gonna need you all to testify that it was a justifiable felony

My first toast of the night is always "to absent friends". Some nights I feel it more than others. Tonight was one of those. It was good night but filled with ghosts. They don't haunt me, per se, but they're ever present on nights like tonight. I celebrate their presence.

This whole rant is amazing but I love "epistemic ecosystem"...

Read the whole thing.
I think you didn't think anything about making that "joke" to a (Canadian) stranger because your entire epistemic ecosystem is contaminated by the people who've convinced you you're a moral failure for not posting about The Crisis 24/7. I think a lot of those people are deliberate saboteurs.

Weird karaoke night. Our normal KJ had back surgery so it's a friend of his. Opened with Folsom Prison and followed it up with Fast As You. That's where the weirdness started. Not a lot of regulars tonight but they crowd that came with new KJ line danced to my Dwight.

Well that's it for me playing with Home Assistant for the night. Setup a script to shutdown my desktop because I frequently forget and would rather just push a button than get up again. The script wasn't working and I decided to play Hearthstone while troubleshooting.

I stopped even trying to make a good turkey years ago after so many failures. My family loves that I do beef for every holiday. This Thanksgiving is smaller as two of the kids are going to spend it with their SO's family so the menu is more sedate.

As someone with ADHD (a learning disability), being a dick about students using tools that cater to their learning styles and capabilities just comes off as pretentious. Everybody learns differently and treating new tools with Luddite gloves is anti-intellectual.

Yeah, I'm going to agree with Akiva and others here - I think setting rules that are based on a failure to understand that learning is individual, and different students learn in different ways is poor pedagogy at best, and a failure to accommodate legitimate needs at worst.
Two things: (1) students who take transcripts don't usually wind up *thinking* during class; they're trying to get every word down. If they actually listen carefully, then can jot down a phrase or two, and that will be enough to remind them of more of what was being said. And ...

The next home assistant adventure will require hardware. Voice control without Google is next on the list. It's a decently long list to be sure and the current item is changing a status light based on Google Calendar entries (no choice there it's work) but that's almost done.
