They should not have fucked over all of our federal employees and hurt so many people for literally nothing.
Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

Hot *damn*. I love when people rip the NYT, bc I'm not alone in believing it's a font of mis- and disinformation. It's possible that following certain reporters is OK, but--and sorry to say this for the diehards--the whole damn paper will never, ever return to its former self.

Amen. My take:

US journalism: there are two sides to every coin.

The story ignored by he-said/she-said journalism: is the coinage debased? Counterfeit? What kind of Archimedean experiments can test these possibilities? What is the evidence, and how might the evidence be appraised by experts?

The NYT has become, at its core, not just anti-intellectual but antithetical to the whole project of the humanities. I suspect it was around the time when Gawker was sued into oblivion that things started changing there. Someone realized that folks like Peter Thiel embodied the more winning vision.

Good essay.
A real journalist provides context, not “both sidesism” masquerading as objectivity. Unfortunately, few, if any, major media outlets practice journalism any longer. They’re just tools for their corporate masters.

I FINALLY got through to Schumer's office!! Took me 7 tries.

The number I got through to was 202-224-6542

Thank you @schumer.senate.gov and DO NOT CAVE
The US Senate might be voting on a Sunday, yet all of @schumer.senate.gov 's phone lines, including DC, are out of service or have no voicemail until Monday.

I don't think this is a coincidence.

NO PINKY PROMISES, SCHUMER. THEY WILL NEVER, EVER VOTE ON HEALTHCARE ONCE YOU CAVE.

John Fetterman’s memoir comes out on Tuesday, so if the phone calls don’t work you can always tell him how you feel while he’s on book tour.

Ugh I do nottt miss the mandatory smile from my retail days. I got pretty good at an expression I can only describe as "technically enough of a smile to stay out of trouble but not so warm that men would think I was flirting" (it mostly worked)
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.

me yesterday: look, Chuck Schumer is an incompetent dipshit, but somehow he’s played the shutdown semi-functionally because his opponents are even stupider

today: you fool, you idiot, Chuck Schumer has only appeared vaguely competent because his caucus actively revolted

should have known better
SCOOP: Schumer was more involved than reported with the attempted cave on the government shutdown. The Gang of 8 Senate Dems had his approval & he was getting daily updates.
In Thursday's caucus meeting, the Gang claimed they had 10 votes to cave. The caucus went nuts, leading to the new proposal.

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
