i've seen people making the argument that it's a result of everyone being broke now, but like, this round was set off in part by piracy of an indie ebook that was on sale for 99 cents

there is a vast and deep well of genuinely free, no-piracy-needed stuff out there
I imagine most of the people trying to claim that stealing indie ebooks is leftism simply have never had to worry about paying rent or for groceries but sorry, your desire for free luxury goods is outweighed by the material needs of their creators

Heavy thread. Powerful reading.
Being among the first interrogated and ultimately fired by DOGE, I certainly felt we were facing the business end of a right-wing conspiracy theory 🧵
DOGE was not a money-saving effort. It was an effort to chase down and prove right-wing conspiracy theories. They went after USAID to prove conspiracy theories about foreign aid. Then they went after SSA to, again, pursue conspiracy theories about Dems paying "illegals" to vote. 1/2

We have a “poverty trap” and it’s driving the destruction of social cohesion.

The “poverty line” is’t 35,000, it’s $150,000, and making more than one, and less than the other is worse than being “poor”.

Which is why the rage.

OMG people are calling respecting BDS a “purity test.”

It sure is a test. Of your most basic willingness to materially stand behind Palestinian liberation. Lot of people failing.

A lot.

Is it a “purity test” to ask someone not to cross a picket line?

Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

I’m sorry but there is no leftist argument in favour of book piracy (even academic books: because in that case honestly a lot of academics will just send you the PDF if you ask, it might even be open access) while libraries exist. And using libraries is the way to keep them existing.

I mean, I would say that life is too short to fight with your family, so if your relatives are all assholes, have festive dinners with friends you actually like, instead, but that is emphatically not what the op-ed here is saying. (I checked.)

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."

I’ve known this pain, over and over. Growing up, most people thought I was Jewish and Israeli bc my dad’s from Jerusalem and my last name is Arabic for Solomon. About half the time, there would be an awful moment when the love they had for me turned to loathing bc my dad is Palestinian.

I had a book come out this year that you can vote for! The Island of Dreams is a dark YA fantasy inspired by Peter Pan that focuses on disability and ageism and our assumptions about whose dreams are eligible for paradise and a chosen path to the good place.

Just watched DC's Blue Beetle film. I really liked it. I don't know what anyone was complaining about.

This was a solid flick.

It gave us a good origin where the theme of family was woven throughout the entire story.

All we were missing was a cameo from Ted Kord. His gear was awesome!

Did I write about an invisible horror so I could talk about the need to be seen?

Would I do that?

A poignant story about a father and a son and a third person who needs so badly to be acknowledged. Just as much as any person in a society that ignores systemic issues and can crush the human spirit so easily. Still, we persist.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.
