In my first piece for @theguardian.com, I told the story about how a Portlander used social media to spark a movement that’s sweeping the nation… and why a similar movement in Portland over a decade prior didn’t have the same reach.
Cycling to school almost became extinct - until one man revived the bike bus
Sam Balto took the idea from a local school to the White House and beyond, inspiring a global movement in which children feel the benefits of cycling together

Proud of my guy and his murder paper.
🚨 Excited to share our forthcoming Social Forces article. Looks at how religious adherent rates relate to murder rates over time. 🧵1/

It’s a proper snow day in Baton Rouge, serious flakes coming down. Oddly quiet with no traffic or distant interstate noise. Gonna load up the bucket bike later with a sled, cardboard boxes, kitchen trays and a vat of hot cocoa. I bought the sled years ago in hopes of a day like today.

Put another way, the ATIIP was more selective than Yale University, which accepted 5% of applicants according to US News and World Report

ATIIP was able to fund less than 4% of applicants and costs

Federal shared use path funding is more competitive than Ivy League admission

There are a lot of photos of Jimmy Carter with this custom-made Rivendell bicycle. He had it for a long time; he must have really loved it.

Where bike-friendly infrastructure is the norm, kids gain freedom. No car keys, no backseat waiting. They learn independence, time management, and how to get around on their own. A small shift in how we design cities helps them grow into confident, capable adults.

A study of 11,000 twins shows how to make America walkable again
It seems obvious that making a neighborhood more pedestrian-friendly nudges people out of their cars. But it’s been tricky to get the data.

Louisiana DOTD lowered the local match required for the Transportation Alternatives Program from a functional 40% to 5% for towns under 5k. New article goes into the details of how this happened. profpubs.com/index.php/jh...

Packed in my daily bike commute: lunch, coffee, change of clothes. Extra stuff today: liter thermos of hot cocoa for coworkers, tin of gingerbread cookies, frosting, decorating candies, tea. It all fits.

Here in Carmel Indiana, we're not exactly what you'd call a "major city", far from it actually, so these numbers on an imperfect counter give me some hope.

Permanent designs like this can make bike infrastructure feel as natural and normal as sidewalks. Here’s a small city in Quebec (just west of Quebec City) with a population of 20,000.

A neckdown, or curb extension, is a traffic-calming feature that narrows the roadway at intersections or mid-block crossings. It shortens crossing distances for pedestrians, improves visibility, and slows down vehicle speeds, creating safer streets for everyone.
Just like freshly fallen snow, autumn leaves can help us visualize how to reorganize street space by revealing which parts of the roadway drivers aren't using.

Raised crosswalks demand motorist attention and naturally enforce speed calming, making modal conflict points safer for everyone. Proper design prioritizes safety. No sign alone can achieve that.

Okay, workshop this movie plot with me:
Suburban single woman agrees to dog sits for her friend who lives in a walkable neighborhood for 3 weeks over the holidays.
She keeps passing an attractive man walking his dog.🧵
Trying to do brand identity work when there’s a hallmark Christmas movie on is impossible.
I unabashedly love these and could watch every single one of them.
