Designer Christopher Dresser, dreamed of creating an art colony in Middlesbrough. Though overshadowed by William Morris, he was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement. Dresser pioneered some of the first designer labels in ceramics, wallpaper, glass and textiles. In 1879 he 1/3

It's all happening for us train enthusiasts (or is it just me?) as today marks 200 years since the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in 1825 - the birth of the modern railway.
So here are some of the many railway linocuts I have done over the years - too many, I hear you say? Surely not… 😂

Got to hand it to the Greens. Rhetoric like this is pretty refreshing in an era of "it's too difficult to fix" and "it's all immigration's fault", which is what we seem to be getting from everyone else.

Politics with a little bit of positive hope is quite nice to see while I doomscroll.

It is a bit crap at the moment, undeniably. It has been a bit crap for a while.

However, if someone tells you that the crapness is the fault of another group in society, they are probably selling you something.

Politicians do this for power. Media outlets do this for revenue.

Don't be a fool.

IMPORTANT STUDY: “On average, the implementation of 30 km/h speed limits in European cities demonstrated a 23%, 37% & 38% reduction in road crashes, fatalities & injuries respectively. Lower speed limits also yielded environmental benefits.” www.nrso.ntua.gr/review-of-ci...

„A people deprived of the capacity to tell the difference between truth and falsehood loses their ability to distinguish between right and wrong“ (Hannah Arndt)

Remember in 2006, when Stephen Colbert said at a White House Correspondents Dinner, “Reality has a well-known liberal bias”?

The salience of the line lingers for a reason.

This is spot on, and not just with regard to legal reporting. We increasingly live in a world of binary and deeply simplistic thinking. Which means that everything is slowly turned into a us-versus-them question. It is disastrous for reasoned debate.

Part (but not all) of the problem is the tyranny of simplicity: media, and the transmission of information in general, often require simple summaries. Some summaries achieve brevity through easy untruths.

We measure our days in bills, deadlines,
But above a river of stars has flown for billions of years.

Every triumph, every heartbreak, a flicker against the endless dark.
And still… how beautiful,
to be a spark in the infinite night.

(Look at bottom right you'll see a galaxy!)

Laugharne tonight.
A night sky filled with countless stars, captured in long exposure. The Milky Way stretches diagonally across the frame as a faint, cloudy band of starlight. On the lower right, a bright smudge, the Andromeda Galaxy, stands out among the glittering field of stars. The image conveys the vastness and depth of space.

It certainly weighs much more and also applies more extra watts to the chainset. About 3,000k or so and the chain was completely worn.

Good Q, I was recently surprised by the rather quick wear on my other half’s e-assist trike and found out it’s a common theme. Think from now I’ll do both miles & chain gauge to monitor the wear.
For my road bikes I rely on my LBS @cycleheaven who do an annual check and it tends to need a new chain

I’ve not seen it to be of much good use tbh & I detest it’s become the lazy answer to the big problems. The way it’s been implemented is wild and it’s creating more problems at societal level like unemployment & energy use without much benefit, except for a limited number of oligarchs & techbros.

More Brexit dividends. What a massive scam!

Brexit dividend: our swimming waters are MUCH more polluted than any EU country's because we no longer have to follow EU environmental law since Brexit so water companies can get away with just about anything.

(Just one of many pesky EU rules Brexiters hated.)

A perfect example of how road design to slow speeds *and* enforcement focused on income-based consequences go hand-in-hand to force drivers to operate more safely. You can't just ask sternly and put up flashing "Your Speed" signs and hope for the best.
In Helsinki, city officials leverage street design to reinforce lower speed limits. “We deliberately have narrow lanes, so the driver doesn’t feel comfortable,” said Reetta Putkonen, the director of Helsinki’s transportation planning division. “Three and a half meters is a normal lane width, even 3.2. We also use trees and bushes to push people to go slower.” For comparison, in the US many lanes are 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide. But Finland’s approach to truly reckless speeding is unique. If a Finn is caught going more than 20 km/h over the posted limit, the resulting fine scales with the speeder’s income. Such tickets can reach eye-popping levels; in 2002 a Nokia executive was slapped with a 116,000-euro fine, equivalent to two weeks’ income, for driving his motorcycle 75 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

That’s a pricey citation, for sure. But Finland’s policy ensures that all residents, not just those of limited means, have a financial reason to avoid driving dangerously.
