i think a (perhaps underappreciated) aspect of this whole situation is the extent to which every elite profession is filled with people who excel at drawing attention and want to be famous more than they want to do the actual job

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

In my experience, courage is usually the product of love and/or solidarity. When we are deeply invested in each other, we are more likely to take risks that we wouldn't take out of mere principle, or for the sake of people we feel disconnected from. Our alienation mass produces cowardice.

It’s a guarantee that you will die. What kind of life will you live in the meantime?

Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.

one of the things that has struck me consistently throughout my entire adult life is how quickly people seem to completely forget what it was like to be a child. the way they felt, the things they wanted and needed. i don't understand because i have never forgotten that

AI is deskilling our young people to the extent that they no longer have the ability, or at least resolve, to craft their own *texts.*

The widespread adoption of these technologies is actually a form of child abuse. We are systematically destroying human potential

We continue to live in a society that ignores the greatest dangers to children (cars, guns, environmental toxins) while looking for someone to blame when they die.

My thoughts go out to Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins. Letting your 10 yr. old and 7 yr. old children walk home is not a crime!
Samuele Jenkins and his wife Jessica Ivey sit in jail grieving their 7-year-old son, Legend, who was hit by a car and killed on May 27.

They're charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse for allegedly letting Legend and his 10-year-old brother walk two blocks alone.

It's hard to overstate how destructive the reflexive "this is a distraction!" stuff that politicians and commentators and people are always peddling.

Everything is happening all at once. That's how authoritarianism works. If you can't navigate and synthesize this, you're not meeting the moment.

"The moderators of a pro-artificial intelligence Reddit community announced that they have been quietly banning 'a bunch of schizoposters' who believe 'they've made some sort of incredible discovery or created a god or become a god.'"
