I see I’ve gotten a bunch of new followers so let me introduce myself: I’m a grad student from Charlottesville now living in Belgium. I research non-state actors and genocide. Mostly I post mostly about international conflict, cats, and stuff I see around Europe.

WHO GIVES A DAMN?

It’s a public service, right there in the name. It exists as a public good for all the people in this country. It’s not supposed to turn a profit, you dolts.

Go audit the Pentagon and see what kind of return on investment we’re getting there.

The USPS faces a tight squeeze. With fewer people using the mail, it’s lost more and more money: $9 billion in the 12 months ending in September alone.

Going after Boko Haram / ISWAP is a decade or more too late. Won’t matter.

Glad we have a cohesive continent-wode strategy for Africa in place.

Int’l law: Seen a report that Nigeria consented to the action. Plausible.

Domestic law: The administration may consider ISIS in Nigeria to be covered by the 2001 AUMF. Less plausible the last time I looked into it.

Merry Christmas friends.

Remember those struggling to celebrate, reeling from the trauma of war, displacement and the targeted bombings of churches.

For 2026, media could commit to not laundering the administration’s talking points in their headlines. The EU bans were not triggered by censorship but about misleading X users.

Why do we feast and overindulge at Christmas? To emulate the hobbit heroes who saved the world. If Pippin can eat ten thousand calories a day, so can you.

A must read.

I’m struck by two things: the significant number of my fellow Americans who are active participants in this regime’s abuse of our neighbors, and the enormity of what we have lost—as individuals, as communities, and as a nation.
So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here
With astonishing speed, the administration has toppled the most cherished pillars of a free society. And the experts agree: It’s all going to get much, much worse.

This Lithuanian national wants to be deported. Lithuania is ready to take her. Instead, she was detained by ICE for overstaying a visa waiver in February and she's *still being held*. These morons can't even deport people who want to be deported.

All she wants for Christmas is to be deported. ICE won't let her go
An American man fell in love with a woman from Lithuania. ICE detained her. The couple thought she'd be deported right away. They were wrong.
