I see I’ve gotten a bunch of new followers so let me introduce myself: I’m a grad student from Charlottesville now living in Belgium. I research non-state actors and genocide. Mostly I post mostly about international conflict, cats, and stuff I see around Europe.

"Every time we have been attacked w/pepper bullets or tear gas or pepper spray … it has felt like it came from anger that we were there, and not from any determined safety need or protocol," said Rev. Hannah Kardon, who has been shot w/pepper bullets _multiple times_. "They are unhinged."

Again, it's really important to understand that anyone who hates theatre, art and academia - three things Britain is still *really bloody good* at making - just hates Britain.

So, the plan is to cut English, the arts, and sociology - the degrees that actually study culture - while on another part of your platform claiming to “defend” British culture.

It’s performance nationalism with a reading age of seven.
Badenoch: Curb students taking 'rip-off' degrees such as English
The performing arts, sociology and anthropology are among the subjects the Conservatives would like to cut

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

Imagine being Angela Merkel, who spent her entire career being relentlessly mocked - in policy and in word - by Viktor Orbán. And here, in retirement, you go to Hungary to essentially run a little personal campaign to shore up all his narratives, even against your own old party in Germany. Just lol

🇩🇪🤔🇭🇺 Merkel: I never saw Orbán as Putin’s Trojan horse in the EU. That’s absurd, nonsense.

Watch carefully, everyone. The whole world must see this.
This is what russia brings to the world — only dеstruction.
Nothing else. This country knows no other way.
Every day, russia dеstroys more and more Ukrainian cities.

I would like some people to reconcile the warmongering EU itching to start a war with Russia that gets talked about in Ireland, and the actual EU that has spent the last 2-3 weeks ensuring at least a dozen separate Russian drone attacks and not fired one shot into Russia in response.

Student journalist Lucas Griffith faces trial today for covering a protest against the deportation of Ayman Soliman, who himself fled persecution for his journalism in Egypt.

Lucas did nothing wrong. This is a big deal and would be national news in normal times.
On trial for journalism in Kentucky.
Two months after their arrests while covering a protest, a pair of local reporters face criminal charges.

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

guys I know every one of you wants to act out this specific tweet to the letter but one of the non-negotiable things about being a catholic is that the pope is the real pope
Tweet from @agraybee

Every lifelong Catholic I’ve ever met is like “I think we’re supposed to give this food to poor people” and every adult convert is like “the archon of Constantinople’s epistle on the Pentacostine rites of the Eucharist clearly states women shouldn’t have driver’s licenses.”

an extraordinary person with an extraordinary legacy who nevertheless didn’t take herself too seriously

when Gary Larson published this cartoon, she was in Africa and her institute was horribly offended and drafted a complaint

the whole thing was defused when she returned - she found it funny
Far Side cartoon with a female chimpanzee grooming a male chimpanzee

The fun part about transnational movements like Hindutva that attack scholars is that this happens across multiple countries. For the Weiss’ of the world moaning about being cancelled, this is what actual intellectuals face. Anyway as good a time as any to share www.hindutvaharassmentfieldmanual.org

one thing i think which informs ezra klein / derek thompson thought is this notion that liberalism won the war of ideas with facts and logic and not like a century and a half of intermittent warfare against the ancien regime(s).

Far-right Catholics freaking out about the Pope doing normal Pope things will always be entertaining.

The Pope blessed some water? Can you even imagine?
Matt Walsh: Horrific. The whole thing. Pope Leo blesses a block of ice and then stands there while these communist freaks do some kind of weird pagan Earth worshipping hippy ritual. The leader of the Catholic Church shouldn’t be anywhere near this nonsense. What the hell are we doing here

Just to be clear these are war crimes. And any committed (small d) democrat should make it clear if/when they win power they will prosecute every war crime.

Hegseth: "We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement."

Look at what the United States Government is citing in the birthright citizenship case.

Non-expert legal scholarship and work done hastily in service of their political goals.
