When looking through letters from the Sultan of Oman, what I thought was glitter seemed to fall out. It was crushed silver particles mixed into the ink so his words shimmered on the page. Fabulous.

When working in the archive of St Mary’s Church in Chennai, I opened a large volume of burial records only for some white-ish powder to sprinkle out on the floor. Later I described it to one of the archivists. Oh, that’s arsenic powder, he said. They put it in to kill bugs that might eat the pages.

It's not just social media. Looks like visitors to the US from Europe and other countries that are part of the visa waiver program will have to submit an enormous amount of data about themselves and their families, including DNA, if proposed new rules are accepted
