Well, let’s be honest, they would have probably cancelled the programme if they had understood the context - wouldn’t want any underrepresented groups being engineers, would they?!

DOGE canceled this Ohio State NSF grant because "climate" appears in the title - it was looking into how to improve retention for underrepresented groups in engineering, not climate change.
IMO, the DEI aspect would have led to cancellation also.
