Was discussing dice mechanics, as you do for the holidays, and someone said something that really clicked for me.

I do not mind if the dice make bad consequences for me, but I don’t like it making problems for OTHER PEOPLE, esp at things I SHOULD be good at.

It feels like letting them down.

If AI were anywhere near as powerful as tool as the boosters say then safety measures and controls would be leveled appropriately.

Consider: encryption *is* a powerful technology, and one of the ways you can tell that's true is the number of controls that got put in place around it.

It's not that I don't know what to do with myself when I temporarily do not have internet. It's just that the anticipation of it coming back any minute keeps nagging at my subconscious when it's down.

Well, also, so much of modern life requires internet...

Today, the December solstice occurred at 15:03 UT. 🔭

Although the #solstice itself lasts only a moment, the term also refers to the day on which it occurs. It marks the shortest and longest day of the year respectively in the Northern & Southern Hemisphere. 🧪

I decided against responding directly, since I'm really not in the mood for a firefight, but...on another thread people are hating on the idea that you, as an academic, can use ChatGPT to summarize books and articles for you during research.

Which is a horrible idea for many reasons.

Explaining Mr. Rogers to kids who didn't grow up with him is a trip because he sounds like a political juggernaut.

When public pools were segregated, he put his feet in a kiddy pool with Officer Clemmens, a Black man.

He saved PBS by addressing senate.

He made his show accessible for blind kids.

As of this morning 4,500 Starbucks workers are on strike. Don’t cross their picket line.

No Starbucks. NO Starbucks gift cards!
JUST IN: This morning, hundreds of baristas have joined our national ULP strike.

☕ The solidarity is strong: For every one barista on strike, dozens more allies have shown up in force to back our cause.

Our strike continues to grow in strength and power! #NoContractNoCoffee
As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

Say #NoContractNoCoffee with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

Want to underscore and underline this. In tech especially, this has been that playbook to try to fight back from a position of paying pretty well for a wide range of jobs. Cut the roles, create an oversight role, hire 10-20% of folks back to manage the same workload. AI is just one more tool for it
This is always the plan — they know the slop is slop so they will hire the original humans back at a cut rate to be slop wranglers, which involves more work and worse outcomes.
If they want to keep getting work, they can review (=rewrite) the AI slop, for 1/3 of their normal rate (which was already low to begin with)

Readers, we HAVE to complain about it, hold the publishers accountable and boycott these books
