that’s funny, because it’s cringe and also because she’s never ‘done the news’ once in her career. she’s coasted on the opinion pages since she started working, which really explains a lot about her whole deal

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

Part of what this reveals is what US labor has been arguing since the late 19th C. At will employment impedes political democracy. If u can lose ur livelihood for ur (non violent & non harassing) beliefs, then being an engaged citizen is all but impossible.

I know I shouldn’t get annoyed, but man, this website. People memorize a few buzzwords and think they’re experts

hell of a thing to say about a personal essay that is quite literally about the horrors of “theocratic” ideas and policies
airbagmoments.bsky.social
This is a great personal story, but, like most stories about the horrible consequences of exclusively Republican theocratic policies, it vastly underplays the responsibility of Republicans and the Christo-facist movements that got us here.

I didn’t really intend to publish back to back personal essays, but I wanted to write about what it’s like to want children while realizing I might never be totally free of the Christian right or its gender bullshit nymag.com/intelligence...

"I don't consider domestic abuse a crime," is a pretty core tenet of conservative ideology, tbh.
phillewis.bsky.social
Trump minimizes domestic abuse during a talk at the Museum of the Bible: "Things that take place in the home, they call crime ... If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say this was a crime, see?"

Rowling is a shitbag but also! HP is NOT GOOD. This isn’t one of those mildly nuanced “oh but Polanski is a genius” situations — HP is derivative, mediocre, critically insubstantial, even with a generous poptimism handicap. Its single outstanding quality as a cultural artifact is its ubiquity.

jesus man, tell me you have no idea who Claremont is or JD Vance's record as a postliberal

Vance would be a much better president than Trump. He has many of the same policy flaws (some worse) but is smarter, does not command the fealty Trump does, is widely unable and unwilling to pull off the same anti-democratic actions, and is a more mentally stable individual.

As stupid as JD Vance is and as dumb as his ideas are, I do not think he would tank global financial markets overnight with the Liberation Day garbage that we saw rolled out in April. Nor do I think he'd ever storm the Capitol and try to chuck out every democratic principle ever.

“Dobson served tyranny all his life, and over time, he sought to enshrine it in the highest seats of power. To him and his heirs, the American home is a laboratory; they inflict suffering in private to better reproduce it in public.”

I always knew I’d write about Dobson when he finally died but he loomed so large in my life that I wasn’t sure what I was going to say until it was time to say it
