Humans have emitted 2750 gigatons of CO2 since the industrial revolution from burning fossil fuels and land use change. To put this in perspective, this is more than the (dry) mass of all living things on earth and everything humans have ever built combined:

I think the greatest gift that being part of our Ethics Initiative this year has given me is the scholarly framework to talk about how failing to phase out fossil fuels is ethically wrong. We can talk feasibility til our ears bleed but there’s an obvious moral aspect that doesn’t need cost analyses

Again, it is utterly shameful & demonstrates the total failure of all of our political institutions that threatening our closest NATO allies with territorial conquest has not immediately ended this presidency.
Denmark lost more troops per capita in the post 9/11 war on Afghanistan. Saying they “are not a good ally” because they won’t surrender their territories to the US is lunacy. We are betraying our allies to satisfy the whims of a would-be Emperor for whom the US is not enough.
They’re again advocating against Denmark when it comes to Greenland

Anyway, imagine if the federal government gave Amazon monopoly ownership of all US highways and guaranteed Amazon a 10% profit every year on their cumulative historical spending on highways, minus the debt they carried. Amazon would build a shitload of highways, the more expensive the better.

The same reason we keep burning fossil fuels and releasing CO₂ to the atmosphere like the future of humanity doesn't matter.
Saving for the future can be difficult because of a cognitive bias known as hyperbolic discounting: our tendency to place greater weight on immediate satisfaction, even if focusing on the long term will have a greater payoff.
