If you see this, quote the energy you bring to Bluesky
I want more info about this beast, but even without much info I'm confident that this sort of rolling battery is going to become ubiquitous in many places and serve many purposes.
Inbox: NYPA and Cornell are showing off this mobile battery unit, which could provide an alternative to diesel generators.

Looks a lot bigger than your standard generator but it also packs a lot of energy — enough to power a stadium concert, or an average NY home for about a week

Especially if you haven't heard of Octopus Energy, maybe take a listen.

The BBC visited one of our Zero Bills homes, where resident like Steph pay £0 for energy (for 5 or even 10 years!)

Zero Bills Homes are popping up across Britain, Germany, NZ and France. We’ve just secured another £100m funding, unlocking 1,000+ more affordable Zero Bills homes across the UK ⚡

I'm dense when it comes to finance, so the fact that I got to a point of understanding how utilities earn profit and why they should or shouldn't earn less means you can too. I stayed up till 3am trying to explain in an accessible way. Hopefully it was worth it!

What If Utilities Just Made Less Money?
California energy companies are asking for permission to take in more revenue. Consumer advocates are having none of it.

Resolved: journalists and editors shall pause in their use of the word "skyrocketing" when describing a numeric increase. Usage may resume after an appropriate cooling off period.

Give me the grace to respond with patience and generosity of spirit when people say rude things because I have ridden a bicycle near* them.

*not cut them off, not made them apprehensive of collision, not ridden against traffic -- just rolled by in their vicinity

This makes TurboTax doubly vampiric: 1) the IRS already does most people's returns and could just get confirmation or corrections on a 1st draft; and 2) this will make tax filing a vector for data scraping.

If we as a society can't even quash this sort of naked parasitism, what the hell can we do?
TurboTax is about to be integrated into ChatGPT, where customers will be guided through tasks tied to their tax filings or financial profile by the AI chatbot.

TurboTax owner Intuit is also paying OpenAI more than $100 million a year to power AI agents.

This is anthropomorphism I can get behind
literally anyone who has ever been in a room where they weren't the most powerful person understands why "all of the above" energy doesn't work

New op-ed from my colleague, James van Nostrand.

Gas bills -- yes, gas too, not just electric -- are rising and Jamie's got 800 words to help you understand why.

He's writing about Massachusetts, but his points hold in multiple other states too.

(If I can get a gift link, I'll add it in a reply)
Why Mass. gas bills are rising — and what we need to do about it - The Boston Globe
Most of what customers now pay each month no longer goes toward fuel, but toward rebuilding and maintaining a gas network that is larger than is necessary to meet future needs.

The best use of pennies is to drill holes in them and use them as washers, which typically cost 10 cents each.

I've been an active member of the NYC Bar Association for years...

Should I join the NYSBA too?

If you want to tell me "YES. It's your lawyerly-civic duty" or "Meh, won't really matter," please feel free to reply
I think one of the underappreciated races on “people need to run for these jobs” lists is state bar associations.

Every state should see a slate of “we are going to sanction and disbar with a VENGEANCE” candidates in the next few yrs.

(You know this is why Bondi’s bro ran for the DC Bar Assn.)
Reup: One thing EVERYONE is missing abt the two things that went down last week--Bondi bowing to Trump's demand for an investigation of Dems, and her re-ratification of the Comey indictment--is how vulnerable Bondi is, both politically and legally.

In 16th cen Florence, the Uffizi (now a famous art museum but originally the Offices of the Medici) were connected to the family's Pitti Palace by a passageway--the Vasari Corridor--that ran across the Arno. This made it possible to avoid people when commuting.

13yo me was shocked to learn this.

What's your most niche and unimportant crusade?

"incremental" should not be used when what is meant is "additional"
What's your most niche and unimportant crusade?

Mine is that I use the symbol "var" (as scientific standards bodies indicate) for reactive power instead of "VAR" (most common) or something weird like "Var" or worse, "VAr".

I'll admit it does feel a bit odd to put "Mvar" next to "MW" and "MVA". 🔌💡

🧵 (1/11) #Greensky 🔌💡 Some news for those who followed along in September, as we got the Poughkeepsie Town board to overturn its moratorium on grid scale batteries, in the face of fierce opposition.
1/x 🧵 🔌💡 #Greensky. Hey climate peeps! Here’s a local victory to celebrate, and some lessons from it. Last night, the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY, voted to overturn its 18-month moratorium (6 months, renewed twice) on grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Those complaining about the high rate of electricity in California, are sort of out of touch with reality. High rates *DONT* mean high bills.

Normal people - i.e. not #energysky - don't care about the RATE they pay, but the BILL at the end of the month.

Californians pay less than 40 states.

Please, when you metaphor, be sure to metaphor responsibly
Seeing the metaphor ‘unhinged’ a lot lately. Hmmmm. When a door is unhinged you realise, possibly for the first time, how heavy and immovable it is without those little miracle hinges. But somehow the metaphor really means something like ‘swinging in a wild, unpredictable, dangerous manner.’
