“I live my life without a transit schedule, and I like it.”

That’s a great, succinct statement about the benefits of frequent service.
The #1 piece of advice that TransLink's CEO offers other North American transit agencies:

Provide frequent service

Global News laid off 26 journalists in B.C. and Alberta today.

In B.C. the layoffs include virtually all of the online team, along with many others.

The business is increasingly cruel, and the hollowing out of newsrooms providing fair and reliable information continues to suck.

You hear transportation engineers (especially for state DOTs) say stuff like, "People want to drive. We're not in the business of social engineering." Honey, your profession has socially engineered our society since the 1950s. It's time to invest more fairly across transportation modes
Imagine a 100m race where we’ve given cars an 80m head start after many decades of building almost ONLY for them. If we then set a transportation goal of “balance” between many more choices in getting around, by definition we have to prioritize the new choices for a while, or they’ll never catch up.

For the younger Canadians among you - FYI, no, it is not normal to be 2 weeks away from the election and 4 days away from advance voting and yet have NO PARTY PLATFORMS!

For the policy-oriented among us, this era of campaigning only on vibes and news releases is frustrating. 😡

YIMBYism is wild because you start to ask questions like “why was single family zoning created?” and “are our regulations for building safety based on any actual safety data?” and soon realize that ~85% of the rules governing our cities are based on nothing but tradition and vibes.
We went through this with zoning, and now we're going through it with building code: trillion dollar industries depend on these things, yet a bunch of precocious bloggers can swoop in and expose these institutions as full of pseudoscience. Does nobody do their job? @aarmlovi.bsky.social

It is a relief to know that our ancestors were worriers — awake in the darkness with crowded minds. Their worry is why we’re here.
Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

My semi-regular reminder of a really important reality about cities, density, services and taxes.

Any questions?
