I'm grateful for my brilliant students. One wrote about impacts of last weekend's debacle: "if we only talk about #Waymo, we will miss a critical, broader conversation around how San Francisco’s innovation policy still treats the city as a laboratory first and a community second." archive.ph/x6Iyq
San Francisco should learn from Waymo’s power outage debacle — and enact tech rollout standards
OPINION: “The weekend outage gave us a clear, non-theoretical glimpse of what happens when new systems meet old infrastructure,” Michael Redmond writes.

This is 404 Media's @jasonkoebler.bsky.social waving at himself through a Flock camera; one of 60 we learned was left exposed to the open internet. Not only could anyone with a link livestream it, but some admin portals were open with no login credentials required.

At least 4 Waymo robots, one in front of the bus and three right behind it. Who knows how many more are heading right into this to suffer the same fate/FUBAR.

Waymo knows they have this problem and so should their regulators and anyone who has been paying attention.

Cars are not as useful as people think they are in a widespread emergency or natural disaster. Driverless cars even less so.
Failed Waymo robot blocking emergency services during a widespread emergency:

Grant St at Sacramento, heart of Chinatown, San Francisco

I've been warning about this scenario for ~7 yrs. Safety drivers fix this in seconds. SFPD will prob have to drive this out of the way.

Yet another example of what happens if we allow LLMs to become a form of epistemic grounding for society.
This is fucking grim. Somebody invented a white guy, an "IT professional" named Edward Crabtree, who stopped the Bondi shooting and spread it all over the internet, which was picked up by AI agents and slop aggregation sites.

The real hero is a fruit stand owner named Ahmed el Ahmed.

Very upsetting that ACLU is pro-drunk driving.

Requiring in-car breathalyzers for people convicted of a DUI is not "a form of racialized wealth extraction."

People of all backgrounds are getting killed and maimed by reckless drivers. Let's stop the carnage!

John Zorn has been such a huge influence on me musically, and I can't believe it took me this long to pick up a copy of Painkiller: Collected Works. If you like grindcore and jazz you should check it out, though their more recent output skews ambient.
