Saw it yesterday and was so moved to see the action many cities around the world are taking. Disappointed that my city of Ottawa as a G-7 capital city is doing crickets!

According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150K trees have been planted & 45ha of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to & manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) by 2050.

Just the start.

Common sense.

My main problem with spending time in #Switzerland is coming back to North America. A country this sensible makes most transportation policy in other places look idiotic.

Which, of course, it almost always is.

“Expanding the average car length from 5 meters (16.4 ft) to 5.5 meters (18 ft) decreases street parking spots by 9.3%, while an additional expansion to 6m (19.7 ft) causes a further loss of 7%…the growing share of larger vehicles has caused many on-street parking spots to effectively disappear.”
Meet the Montreal Mayor Who Declared War on SUVs
Oversized vehicles are devouring street parking spaces in the Canadian city. So one borough’s mayor is fighting back with bigger fees for hefty trucks and SUVs.

Wow. What a mess. Field day for lobbyists.

"Ford government labour ministers have selected groups to receive hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars for worker-training programs against the advice of civil servants who’d evaluated their applications, Ontario’s auditor general has found."

In a city of world-class artists and production crew hunting for the next gig, Andrew Cuomo made a TV ad the same way he wrote his housing policy: with AI.

Then again, maybe a fake Cuomo is better than the real one?

Lies are never the truth.

Stupidity is never common sense.

Worse is never great.

Treachery is never patriotism.

War is never peace.

Death is never life.

No matter how much they want you to think they are.

This didn’t happen under Biden because he believed government should actually function on behalf of the people, not actively work against them in order to benefit the wealthy.

As always, there's a @tomflood.bsky.social (/ @thebikinglawyer.bsky.social) graphic to explain. A route is only as strong as its weakest (or missing) link.

The survey is open until Sept 29. Take a look & share your feedback too: engage.ottawa.ca/gladstone-an...
A picture of a highway style bridge with a missing segment. Text at the top says "were not seeing drivers using the new bridge we built". At the bottom "connected networks are just as important for people on bikes as they are for those driving cars" The Biking Lawyer logo is in the bottom corner.

Bike-lanes don’t cause traffic congestion.

Car dependency, foolish land-use sprawl, too many (& bigger) cars driving too much taking up too much space, highly subsidized driving costs, and not enough choices in how to get around, ALL cause traffic congestion.

Think about it. THAT’S common sense.

High-speed rail is coming to #Canada!

This week, federal government fast-tracked the Alto project.

Will link #Quebec City- #Montreal - #Ottawa - #Toronto , a corridor with half Canada's population.

Projected to carry 30 million passengers a year—twice US Northeast Corridor—on 300 km/h trains.

It's fair to say Mark Sutcliffe inherited a mess of a public transit system when he was elected, but throughout his term as Mayor, despite running on a pledge to "fix transit" he's done everything he can to make that mess ten times worse.
