I volunteer at my local book store. I can confirm that this is the case first hand.
If a regular comes in and buys a book, next time they come buy we ask them what they thought. If they particularly liked it and feel like recommending it, we likely go ahead and reorder it right then and there.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Had a really cool fairphone. I had finally found a good and healthy balance of privacy, convenience, and boundaries with it. It was both a work tool and a pocket sized digital garden.
I just lost it whilst rushing to an appointment. FML.
