My favorite trope I've twisted so far is that when Feliens (cat-people) go into biological rut, culturally they still make sure to establish consent before they get down to Business with someone.
It's Very Bad if they don't. And most of them have a FWB on standby so there's minimized pressure.

It fits neatly into eugenics based ideas that our identity is founded in "blood" not community or culture. A disconnected person for whom rumored "blood" is a pass being used to drown out the voices of people who are invested in their culture and their community is an injury to everyone involved.

I remember having a UBI. It was called “living with my parents,” and I had all my food/shelter needs covered, plus free access to a (shared) TV, music, books, a library card, cars I could borrow and more.

Always grinds my gears when people say "No one would work drudge jobs if there was a UBI"
But even staying completely capitalist, I disagree. If I received a baseline living-wage UBI, and then I was offered REWARDS for drudge jobs, I'd take it! I want to save up for treats and travel and hobbies!

I think these usually turn into my characters' hubrises. (Hubrii?) Aubrey from Dancing book, for example, doesn't get any approval at home. So he seeks it away at school. A people-pleaser, he'll do anything for others but not enough for himself. In a nascent poly relationship, that's poison.

In this house we held Rogue One to be the best SW movie even before Andor was announced, but every heart wants what it wants. In fairness, I tend to award a lot of points just for trying something different, in general.
