this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.

Finally, a perfect job for ChatGPT
I am curious about the entire infrastructure within the White House now that probably exists just to tell Trump he's great at everything. He probably believes he's doing great in the polls because they told him that. Not an excuse for ignorance, of course, but it must be a whole office for this work

You may be thinking "How can an entire political party be organized around the policy of taking from everyone and giving to the rich? No one would vote for them." Well that's where Lying comes in

"imperialism consists exclusively of those acts which the empire i am in charge of does not do" is a pretty natural definition of empire for an emperor who got his throne by condemning imperialism

If you found out a person in your group of friends was torturing and starving people in their basement with the money you gave them, would you continue associating with them and giving them money? Or would you turn them in to the authorities?

This is a thought exercise unrelated to current events.

I feel like the "the Pope can't be right or left wing because the church is very old" discourse misses that the church is indeed a very conservative institution, but it's also a *moral universalist* institution, and universalism and conservatism are increasingly at odds right now

BREAKING: Google Earth updated their images of Gaza. Compare.

Being against this is not “antisemitic” or “pro-terrorist”. It’s pro-human.

Beloved #pet: a #Roman burial of a #dog. The animal was buried with a vessel, its head was bedded on a piece of leather.

Even the Romans knew it: A life without #dogs is possible but pointless!

It's a big mistake people make that they think phrases like "be a man" or "man up" mean something like "don't be a woman".

In reality it means "don't be a child". You become a man when you stop acting like a baby who only cares about himself. Whining about women is the exact opposite of that.

I am for the prisoners at the bar, and shall apologize for it only in the words of the Marquis Beccaria: “If I can but be the instrument of preserving one life, his blessing and tears of transport, shall be a sufficient consolation to me, for the contempt of all mankind.”

“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

What I've found in my brief experience consulting AI is it'll say wrong or doubtful things with as much confidence as it says what's correct.

Real people will at least give you qualifying phrases or at least the shifty eyes or whacko vibe.

With AI it's like talking to an idiot or a cult leader.

It hasn't been lost on me that anti-war activists are still protesting the Gaza War just as actively since Trump's election but the mainstream media has stopped giving their protests attention now that it hurts Trump instead of Biden.
Seems like has been very little coverage of protests happening in the U.S.--not necessarily an intentional media blackout (although possibly), but the result of a longstanding stance in legacy media that protests aren't worth covering, activists aren't credible sources (but somehow CEOs are), etc.

Aside from the obvious direct harm, what's so irritating is that a handful of spoiled ignorant assholes are breaking things that we all built together. They weren't content to own almost everything, they had to wreck what little they didn't own. It's vandalism on a mass scale and has to be punished
