@merriam-webster.com How could you 😭 not even an option to toggle or hide the worse than useless AI feature

What is a "custom synonym"?? I've been a writer my whole life, I love a good thesaurus, synonym lists are fun to browse. This adds nothing. Does "custom" just mean "based on your mined data"?

As I am often saying, the central pillar of Cantor Thought is Tarpeian Socialism, the idea that in a society of significant size, the occasional slob is going to rob a 7-11 and that's not great, but whatever, but if you're given power by society and abuse it, we push you off a big rock.
SEOUL, Jan 13 (Reuters) - South Korea's special prosecutor on Tuesday requested the death penalty for former president Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of insurrection over his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024.

Survival and safety: Americans would live 4 years longer. 10,000 fewer babies would die each year from reduced infant mortality rates. Maternal deaths would drop by three-quarters. 85,000 fewer people would die from opioid overdoses.

Family and work: Parents would get 25 weeks of paid parental leave. Workers would get 27 days of guaranteed paid time off per year. We'd work 231 fewer hours per year—nearly six fewer weeks. Net childcare costs would fall by 60%.

If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

Had a brief dream in which one of the podcast hosts I follow here quoted my post and literally gave me the gold star emoji ⭐ which I am now awarding to myself for real because I'm a good noodle and I deserve it.

And here's some for you too! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ICE agents are, simply put, fucking clowns. Some observations from four days on the ground in Minneapolis.

From a good friend in Minneapolis: "Target is allowing ICE to stage in their parking lots, use their restrooms, and abduct people from inside their stores - so if you weren’t boycotting already, now is the time." They were staging in Chicago as well.

I'm going to post the link to the video but not the actual video which autoplays and is utterly brutal. Instead I'm posting the photo of the man before ICE assaulted him.

Perhaps the surest sign of AI not being super intelligent is the amount of tailored scams targeting the finances of authors, which is as rewarding as trying to mug a seagull.

Everybody should watch this and see this woman, who has a baby in her arms and is thrust into basically a standoff, develop courage in real time.

Never touch the stuff myself.

I just started a Substack where I'll post about culture and technology! It would mean a lot of you checked out my first post, where I argue that consumers don't really want to automate their home if it means working more.

I was inspired by @iwriteok.bsky.social 's reporting on CES and @edzitron.com 's podcast to create a substack and write something very dumb. A better title might be "In Defense of Laundry".
We don't want your laundry-folding robot that can't fold laundry. Hope this helps.
CES used to stand for “Consumer Electronics Show”. This year showed more AI slop and useless robots than ever. Maybe we've come to the end of consumer tech innovation.
