In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

DHS is abusing its authority to shut down ICE-watching accounts.

Reporting on public ICE activity is protected by the First Amendment. It’s also something journalists do routinely.

NEW data I've received: Just 5% of people detained by ICE since October 1 have had violent criminal convictions, 3/4 had no criminal convictions at all. Most "criminals" had immigration, traffic, and vice offenses. Not the "worst of the worst"...

Shutting down the government doesn't shut down the First Amendment.

It's absurd to exclude reporters from immigration hearings absent government permission, especially when it's impossible to obtain permission, and especially when the current government despises First Amendment freedoms.
