Floored by this story. A man wrote a pollite email to a federal prosecutor objecting to the deportation of an Afghan seeking asylum. DHS responded with an administrative warrant to get the man's info from Google, then visited his home to intimidate him.

I don't mean to seem alarmed, but it appears Google's book search function is, just...gone.

In a sane country it would be a huge deal, front page news, that a privately owned utility that millions researches, from journalists to scholars, rely on every day to advance knowledge can just disappear.

This entire answer from Mike Johnson — the speaker of the House and a lawyer — must be seen.

It is fundamentally wrong on both points: as to administrative warrants (which need not be signed by immigration judges) and as to judicial warrants (which are not "new" for authorizing home entry).

For decades, nativists have sold America this narrative that immigrant welfare is behind our deficits and debt. This figure shows how absurd that is. This is all government expenditures, federal, state, and local, for the last 3 decades. Immigrants are not to blame:

You all know my feelings on this, but virtually everything described as "free speech" or "open debate" for the last few decades has really been about the idea of a closed salon, where everybody has to follow the rules and be respectful to the host and nothing actually matters that much.
Kind of weird people get so agitated about criticism of the Harper’s Letter, which is a paean to the indispensable virtues of open debate, even when it upsets people.

Probably if I were an editor, author, journalist, researcher, or head of an organization I’d be able to follow along better.

No, no, no. The NYT assured me this very morning that this is a legitimate "fraud crackdown" that has sadly gotten slightly tainted by politics.

(Worth noting the NYT itself was the first to resurrect the years-old Minnesota fraud story in November with zero news hook. TikTokers followed the NYT)

It dawns on me that a huge swath of the powerful class does not consider sexual predation to be a crime; they believe it is their privileged birthright. And those around them are there to facilitate, protect and play defense for them. It’s quite the inherited rapist/protection racket.

First of its kind in 30 years, it finds that the fiscal effects of immigration remain strongly positive and have helped keep federal deficits from being even higher.

We saw the inhumanity of ICE's operation in Baltimore & Marylanders have made clear: we do not want these facilities in our state.
