the no tax on tips thing getting no serious pushback and the growing right-wing opposition to property taxes is a dark omen for the future of political economy

paying your taxes is good and that includes you (yes you) not just "billionaires"
The year is 2035. California's entire base of taxation is young renters and their entire budget goes to insuring suburban McMansions built in fire hazard regions. Half of Florida is underwater financially and the other half literally. Illinois is fine but still fucks up transit funding constantly.

The thing that bothers me about our post-pandemic COVID discourse is how much of it isn't about how to do things better next time, it's playing Monday morning quarterback. It's not about learning, it's about spending years trying to win arguments that people had online from March 2020.
this is a good response to In Covid's Wake

what Kucharski gets right, crucially, is holding in tension the fact that the shutdown was brutally and inequitably costly, and the fact that not doing a shutdown would have been even more brutal and inequitable

“The true champs of safe drunk driving.”

And there it is.

So much anti-social behavior boils down to, “But I’m More Specialer than everyone else and their rules shouldn’t apply to me!”
I have a bunch of intersecting thoughts here but basically 1) excessive alcohol consumption is an urban activity, 2) we shouldn’t legalize drunk driving and 3) we should more heavily penalize parents whose kids abuse alcohol in such a drastic fashion.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!
