If the lobby hacks were very willing to participate in a fraud this obnoxious and insulting, then we should ask: what else did they treat as extremely important and/or concerning, while fully understanding it was fraudulent drivel? It seems unlikely you reach that level of complicity as a one-off.

This is exactly what happened with Corbyn and the Brexit referendum. He campaigned for Remain, but the Labour Right wanted to find any excuse to coup him and so even though he did exactly what was asked of him, he "didn't put his heart in it" and "wasn't doing it with enough vim"

Oligarchs are always going to want to shift to fascism because liberal democracy becomes inconvenient for them and because they fear the harm of their actions will eventually generate enough resistance that it can't be contained without authoritarianism.
