games don't age, just the literal, physical hardware we play it on, and it's only the culture that chooses to treat older games as "obsolete" and "outdated", a thing we don't do with literally any other artistic medium

the point of a movie is not to be done watching it. the point of a song is not to be done listening to it. the gamers' obsession with completion as the only motivator to play a game has directly led to the medium's worst traits. "AI gaming ghost" is a reflection of the lack of willingness to engage
Sony has patented an AI gaming ghost that will play PlayStation games for you when you get stuck www.eurogamer.net/sony-has-pat...

the temptation to let sisyphus earn points to spend on stickers for the rock is the death drive which will lead us all, and more importantly gaming, to ruin. it may have already done so.

Unironically tho gamers gotta take some of that energy about artists compromising on sexuality and direct it towards criticizing mechanical compromises & homogeneity. Right now you have massive herds of gamers calling for artistic compromises by demanding devs to remove tank controls and so on
Gamers will hear you made something slightly less sexy and will scream about compromising your art to external pressures, but no one would defend me if I made a game where you had to double tap to dash :(

I said this before & I'll say it again - enemies aren't actually living beings, they are gameplay pieces. Whether or not they are good is determined SOLELY by how much they pressure the rest of the mechanics, not how well they perform aggression. Even "aggression" is just a metaphor

came in on a squeaker but my GOTY is SEKTORI (PS5, PC).

It's like watching an artist create a stunning portrait out of those shitty 4-crayons-and-a-paper-menu kits they give children to keep them quiet at restaurants. Dual stick shape-blasters should not be this intricate or thrilling!!!

Let's start a campaign to add the tag "Arcade Puzzle" to games like Tetris, Lumines, Puyo Puyo, Petal Crash, etc on Steam. These games get lumped in with great but completely different genres of puzzle games like Portal and sadly sidelined. Steam users have the power to carve out this niche!

I'm reminded of MH Wilds doubling down on making the first 20+ hours an implicit tutorial for newcomers even though Worlds and Rise sold so much and guaranteed Wilds would have an install base of at least seven million experienced players. Not every game can be an entrypoint in a series/genre!
I'll keep saying this over & over - nobody got into shmups to play novice modes. They got into them because they saw Hibachi, Larsa, an Ikaruga double play or something like that. Devs gotta be confident & have a punk attitude & spend less time thinking about novices

Some modern STGs are conscious of possibly being anyone's first arcade scrolling shooter, and bend themselves into knots trying to be an entire genre tutorial before being their own identifiable game.

As ever, make the games/music/videos/writing you'd want to enjoy, and others will enjoy it too.

Gamers have become conditioned to love every single erosion of integrity from the medium all while making excuses for it in their minds and to others. And their money conditioned devs. If you for a second think that these companies wont get away with it ur fooling yourself

The only thing that can be done is curating real games/devs like ur curating game replays to save the time of the small handful of ppl who wont be fully on board with this shit within a few years. Theyll find excuses and shift their attitudes, maybe "theyre transparent so its ok" whatever it takes.

You feel almost warm towards them, like a kindred spirit, a potential apprentice

it's the press and critics who are so excited to say "finally, a jrpg I can say I like" as if the genre is inherently shameful or something

I see a lot of people bemoaning western games for being increasingly homogeneous, ugly and unstable, but I think that does a disservice for the many horrible gacha games on display that are basically indistinguishable from each other too.
