No word of a lie, I was on the players' coach on the way to a rugby match. We stopped at a services, next thing I know they're taking a group selfie in which ALL THIRTY OF THEM are adorned with paper crowns

In a different millennium, I worked in car insurance covering the Pennines, and one winter we suddenly had a huge spike of cars hitting sheep, and it turned out that one council switched from salt to a salt/molasses mix, which the sheep thought was delicious, so they crowded the roads to eat it.
This is a fun story about how salt stops roads from icing up, and how we could do it better — like using cheese brine on roads in Wisconsin 🧪 www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-... by @meghanbartels.bsky.social on Scientific American

News sites should ask what year you got your first job. Then all starter salaries mentioned should be followed, in brackets, by an inflation-adjusted equivalent in that year.

"Junior doctors start on £28,000 (roughly equivalent to £16,000 in 2001)"

People underestimate the impact of inflation.

A little church highlight this week: getting aggressively enthusiastically recruited to the choir by what I can only describe as a gang of choristers, during coffee after midweek Eucharist

It's been a while since I read The Power, and I'd almost forgotten how good a writer @naomialderman.bsky.social is. But OOOOOFFF. The Future is painfully brilliant.

I'm purging all the toxic 🗑 from my shelves and want something to replace them with!

This is a post by me, who just went to play Tetris for 20 minutes after seeing something horrible and it did in fact seem to help. I don’t really care if it’s placebo (actually the evidence is pretty compelling, you can look it up). Placebo itself is a great treatment.
It is terribly easy to unexpectedly see photos of appalling and extremely upsetting things on the internet.

There is actually some pretty good evidence that playing Tetris after seeing something like that can help your brain to not store it as a PTSD sudden flashback memory.
