Yikes. The Financial Times editorial pages calling Trump a tyrant and predicting invasions and the destruction of the international order: that's … well, that's not giving me the happy fun feels.

DO NOT MISTAKE EARNESTNESS FOR A THING TO BE AFRAID OF. “Cringe” or s too often simply just the word used to mask the discomfort that comes with being vulnerable! It’s okay to feel vulnerable about being earnest about important issues in the world!

Yes. I’m seeing way too many posts about grannies & wine moms. It’s ageist & misogynistic. I’ll stand next to people who make those comments regardless. We need solidarity. But I’m gonna call it what it is: bigotry.

Older women created the blue wave in 2018. Many of them were even white!
If in 2025 you’re still doing sneering ‘heh, look at these cringe wine mom protestors’ type shtick I can’t think of any reason anyone should listen to you

Oh the disdain had nothing to do with the quality of their analysis and *everything* to do with them being “moms”

The left always attacking any problem with their particular hobby horse as a way to discredit something that will move the needle in the right direction is exhausting. The goal is incremental improvement. There is no perfect solution. Let your side win even if you don’t win.

This is the biggest problem on the left. Not only a total lack of cohesion in repulsing authoritarian/fascist opponents but having to write an encyclopedic preamble stating that you recognize all oppressions, offenses, prejudices, biases in human history and prehistory, and self flagellate for it b
I just deleted a six-post thread about how under Trump it is unsafe for academics to travel to the US because of a quote-tweet pile-on from the left.

People were furious I didn’t append a history of Jim Crow, American Imperialism, etc—or even that I mentioned Mao’s murders alongside Hitler’s.

It was a good (and very useful) thread. Taking it down is quite unfortunate. The reason for taking it down — critiques about neglecting similar historical situations — is proof positive that academics are suited to police discourse but unsuited to produce generative action.

Great idea. @thebjps.bsky.social has started a "letters to the editor" format that is similar. Publish small points that should be in print, but don't need a full paper. In philosophy, there are way too many full papers that could have been a page. In econ seems they just never see the light of day.
