“[The 1987 flood] was called the ‘big one’ back then. This is 100 times over what we experienced,” said Emily Davis. She was a 10-year-old at Camp Capers when the 1987 flood hit. “Why didn’t they learn from this? Why wasn’t there a better system?”
A deadly 1987 flood foreshadowed the Texas disaster. Survivors ask, ‘why didn’t we learn?’
The Fourth of July tragedy was described as something no one could have seen coming. But in ‘flash flood alley’, an eerily similar event 40 years ago holds important lessons

Wu: "It's a 500 year storm that keep hitting every year. We're saying there's something wrong with that. You're not supposed to have 500 year events every year. And every time Dems offer up legislation to say 'let's do something about this, let's save lives,' it's uniformly rejected on party lines"

Stephen Miller spent millions of federal dollars to do a "show of force" in a quiet Los Angeles public park while the administration tells Texas it doesn't have the money to help them handle this nightmare.

I'm really hoping to see some newspapers/elected officials state this obvious point.
Kristi Noem: "Some of what for what you saw for our response in Texas is going to be a lot of how President Trump envisions what FEMA would look like into the future ... emergencies are locally executed. They are state managed. The federal government comes in and supports."

The Texas Tribune included some of these transcripts in this article....
Did fiscal conservatism block plans for a new flood warning system in Kerr County?
In the last nine years, federal funding for a system has been denied to the county as it contends with a tax base hostile to government overspending.

Let's see if the mainstream press EVER reports on this. Many of us have known about this for 4-5 days.

They literally want people to get used to dying more frequently from preventable causes. Chalk it up to "God's will," let the government off the hook, channel more money to billionaires.

every day, deranged stuff that would be front page headlines for a Democratic president but has been totally normalized by the press
REPORTER: Families are upset because warnings didn't go out in time. What do you say to those families?

TRUMP: Well I think everyone did an incredible job under the circumstances. Only a bad person would ask a question like that. Only an evil person would ask a question like that.

Says there should be at least 200 more ppl at this point

"The bottom line is that Trump and DOGE made drastic cuts to the NWS and the NOAA. Retired federal scientists warned the cuts could hamstring forecasts and make extreme weather events less predictable and more dangerous."
Trump gutted the weather service. Then Texas flooded.
It's a brutal reminder that in disasters, we need the federal government.

Again: Regardless of the role NWS played here, Trump/DOGE cutting these key departments is not making us safer and is only paving the way for more tragedies in the future and making them harder to recover from.

We’re not doing this. There were flash flood watches and warnings. It may have been during the night, but the weather service is doing heroic work under terrible staffing and funding conditions.

Texas officials are shifting blame because they were asked directly why they didn’t order evacuation.
