interesting thing about the ai discourse is that you will say "companies pumped a trillion into glorified chatbots" and get the answer of "well ai will revolutionize medical diagnosis/chem research etc" and its like ok but those companies didnt fund those, they very pointedly funded the chatbots

Recently turned in a deeply researched draft of a book on What AI Actually Is and reader, this is 100% correct
"The problem with AI isn't that it can do your job. It can't. The problem with AI is that your MBA-brained boss's boss doesn't know how your job works and thinks AI can do your job at fractions of a penny on the dollar, and hears the siren song of 'maximize shareholder value'."

MBA-brain is real.
They’re literally advertising it.

Meta needs all the training data and talent it can get, but has no money to license copyrighted works for AI training.

They instead use everything on Instagram and Facebook, and potentially in the future: directly from your camera roll.

Have LLMs revealed something true and terrible about ourselves? That we tend to value confidence over expertise? Because we don’t *know* stuff, but like if it sounds right.

Is that why we trust the grifters who sold us this bollocks and the politicians and businesspeople who are forcing it on us?
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Anime was popular in the Soviet Union -- even Andrei Tarkovsky watched it. And animators in the USSR wanted to compete.

The recently restored Mystery of the Third Planet was an odd, wonderful attempt to do so. We explore its story: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/soviet-anime

Stop using generative AI. There is no legitimate use of generative AI. There is no “I hate AI but this is ok”. Not everyone is using it. We do not have to “get used to it or be left behind.” Just don’t. Just stop. Delete the app. Close your account. Save some money. Take the first step.

This is all very good. To have it in legal black and white. Refutation of most of the usual defences of AI / LLM copyright infringement. They’re spinning a web of bullshit to cover what they did wrong, and here’s why.

And...yes. Another big AI decision. When a win is maybe not a win. The AI training is fair use cult may be very disappointed by Meta's Summary Judgment "victory" in its copyright suit. Be very very careful not to be spun by Meta's proxies and advocates.
