Yes! Even his charming kid-friendly films (Totoro, Kiki’s) have a ton of tension. The pressure Sasuke is under to be the “woman of the house” and hold it together while worrying her mother might die is… a lot!! It’s nice the films are pretty and grownups are kind but they’re hardly sanitized.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

A fascinating interview with @jdragsky.bsky.social about the way we consider (and fail to consider) the TTRPG rulebook as an object in itself. For me, this focus articulates TTRPGs with the history of the book, experimental book design, and concrete poetics.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Love to read and it feels like such an indulgence I have to make room for around work and parenting

I make an effort to get in a few minutes of reading every day but completely sympathize with the need to vege out for 45 minutes in front of the tv before passing out at night

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

reminder the two off switches in google admin settings that say they can be used to turn off gemini actually don't do what we want them to.

only way to turn it off it is to directly contact support for them to expose a secret third toggle that really turns it off. (also: it cannot help you do it 🤖)
me asking google gemini: turn off Google's AI assistant forever and don't ever turn it on again under any circumstances

it replies: I can't help with that. Do you need help with anything else? terminator 2 movie arnold with cyborg eye saying I cannot self terminate you must lower me in the steel.

Absolutely loved @levgrossman.com’s THE BRIGHT SWORD. Really a must-read for any fans of Arhturiana and chivalric romance/adventure. Who do I gotta beg to direct or storyboard the adaptation??

I've been making videos for over twenty years and I'm still learning new and better ways to do it. This facetious "creative are hoarding talent" shit from right wing airheads is infuriating

In Japan the hot topic right now is Sora AI and the people who support AI over there have suddenly coined the term "ability rich class" to all creatives against AI. It's a total mess right now

The last of the giant flower beetle saga...

Mecynorrhina Ugandesis

The very first one I ever reared, although they were a black-orange variant. I think the blue-pink is so iconic on them though

The Japanese Mario 64 official strategy guide is an incredible thing. "Can we make little hand-made dioramas of all the levels?" "Sure, why the hell not."

And I don’t want to hear “it’s easier than ever! Get your friends! Use an iPhone”

No.

Yes it is easier in a technical sense. But the pipeline to funding? Getting the movie seen? Having it move your career forward? Not to mention the spare time and money to survive?

None of that is easier.
