“Can’t believe NYC elected a Muslim as mayor.”

In truth—a Black American Christian woman swearing in a Ugandan American Muslim of South Asian ethnicity as his Syrian American wife holds the Qurans he swears in on, all while standing on the steps of a subway station—is the most NYC thing imaginable.

There's a line in Robert Browning's "Andrea del Sarto," in which he says "Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for?"

I think that's a message for our fighting fascism in 2026. We have to *try* to make our reach exceed our grasp.

A couple of mixed flower watercolours from five years ago. I rather like them because they haven't been over-finished: just studies without any thought of exhibiting them. There's a lot of these in sketch pads and folders from over the years.

🧵 Most people don’t know this, but the first U.S. TV commercial to feature Black people in a non‑stereotypical way aired in 1948. Here's the true story of why it mattered.(cont)

12YO girl signed up to do “stand up comedy” at the talent show. 13YO boy decided to heckle her. Teacher started to tell the boy to leave her alone, but the 12YO comedian said “no, no, let him go, this is the closest he’s ever going to get to having a conversation with a girl.”

I've been lacking anything really flowery or macro of late; most plants are sensibly hiding from the frost, as are their tiny six legged helpers. As some light and color in the bleak winter, how about some rose shaped #bloomscrolling from the summer

This is extraordinary, heartbreaking, and a red alert warning sign for our democracy.

These people are about to be federal judges, and they refuse to answer whether the U.S. Capitol was attacked on January 6.

They say they can't comment because it's "a political controversy".
Sen. BLUMENTHAL: Was the U.S. Capitol attacked on January 6, 2021?

Trump nominee: *dodges*

Trump nominee: Well, individuals entered the Capitol.

Blumenthal: You are in fear—how will you have the courage to be fair and impartial?

I've tried and failed a couple times to write a post explaining how serious this would be. NCAR is globally essential to our climate change response. This can't just be replaced. Every scientist in the world will be doing climate research with one hand tied behind their back for at least a decade
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

The media needs to stop writing headlines like “The CDC changes course on vaccines and autism” and “The CDC defends measles response”.

NONE of this is coming from legitimate scientists at the CDC.

ALL of it is coming from RFK Jr.

Every such headline is causing further harm to public health.

Saddened by the demise of Joe Ely. From Lubbock to Austin and beyond, he offered a unique voice and style. I’m grateful for the joy, fearlessness, and sense of place he gave us all. My thoughts are with Sharon and his family, his friends, and the countless Texans who loved him and his music.

It all matters, yes, but this matters more than Susie Wiles, matters more, even, than the travel ban; more than all of Trump’s wars actual & looming (Venezuela, Ukraine, Somalia, Gaza) combined. It’s like the Cuban Missile Crisis, only U.S. is aiming it missiles at everyone, starting with itself.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

As James says, this isn't even about climate.

It's about all the tools, platforms, models, datasets we use to study and forecast weather and understand how it impacts people, too.
These people are nuts. NCAR developed the GPS dropsonde, which revolutionized the understanding of TC structure, improved forecasts, and validated remote sensing platforms, as documented in over 400 peer-reviewed publications in the last 25 years. And that’s just one of NCAR’s countless advances.
