@ctraeger.bsky.social & I have a chapter in the new Handbook of the Economics of Climate Change (Eds: Lint Barrage & Sol Hsiang, Elsevier)!

We synthesize insights from 2+ decades of research on how uncertainty shapes optimal climate policies and affects the SCC. Our main takeaways:

Teori og empiri tilsier at skattekutt i stor grad kapitaliseres i boligpriser. Dvs. at lavere eiendomsskatt gir høyere boligpriser. Et kutt er dermed ikke en fordel for de som skal kjøpe bolig i fremtiden, kun en gevinst for de som allerede eier de 34% dyreste boligene. www.nrk.no/stor-oslo/by...

This is the primary contributor to the acceleration in global warming in recent years. Cutting air pollution saves lives and is unequivocally worth doing, but it is also driving about a quarter (~0.14C) of the approximately 0.5C warming the world has experienced between 2007 and 2024.

As a reminder, land areas (where we live) are warming around twice as fast as over the oceans. Subsequently, most of us are 'feeling' temperatures rising faster than the global mean record.

Graphic from zacklabe.com/climate-chan...
Line graph time series showing global land surface temperatures (90°S to 90°N) in a red line and global mean (land+ocean) surface temperatures (90°S to 90°N) in a blue line. Temperatures are averaged annually from 1900 through 2024. Linear least squares trends are also shown from 1990 to 2024. The land is warming faster than the global mean.

yes, the economic arguments for regulating air pollution are strong

Cool new AER paper uses data from Clean Air Act offset markets to assess the efficiency of air pollution regulation. The analysis finds that marginal benefits of abatement exceed mean offset prices more than ten-fold, across most regions and pollutants.

New publication: “A simple growth model of open economies”

Small twist to Solow model, aligns it better to open economies.
Contribution:
1: Organizes many empirical observations under simple framework.
2: Enables teaching open-economy growth at undergrad.

A simple growth model of open economies
This paper makes a small twist to a seemingly simple assumption in the Solow model: instead of agents saving a fraction of their entire income, as in the classic Solow model, they here save a fractio....

New paper: We provide an analytical microfoundation for how much externalities firms will internalize.
#econsky

We started the project thinking one thing and then learnt we were (partly) wrong. That is why we write theory papers.

ps. @tckwok.bsky.social is on the job market and he is brilliant!

🚨NEW working paper! In our new research, @danielspiro.bsky.social, Arthur van Benthem and I study how ownership influences pollution outcomes.🧵
nber.org/papers/w34203
We provide a theoretical micro foundation for how much pollution (negative externalities) a firm will internalize based on the ownership distribution of its shareholders. Small shareholders, compared to large ones, want the firm to spend more on avoiding pollution since they suffer less profit loss for the same environmental benefit. In particular, if a shareholder holds a share of 1/N, where N is the population in society, that shareholder’s preferences align with a social planner’s. Three theoretical predictions arise. First, small shareholders will systematically vote for a greener corporate profile. Second, firms with a smaller weighted median shareholder will pollute less. Third, countries with concentrated corporate wealth holdings and/or more
individualized firm ownership pollute more. This implies that standard models of externalities in environmental economics and macroeconomics containing representative agents are either internally inconsistent or not fully specified.

I'm not sure many folks realize just how persistent the warming from CO2 is.

Here is a set of 1000-year climate model runs (using FaIR) simulating one year of CO2 emissions (40 gigatons in 2020); a millennia later the world has not cooled back down!

DOE's embarrassment of a "climate science" report is 150 pages where as this response from the scientific community is 500.

My take: It takes much more effort to refute nonsense than it does to generate it, a tax on the time of all who care about fact and accuracy
