A lovely @risenc.bsky.social obit of John Olson, the sole analyst who was right about Enron and was fired for his justified skepticism. I was pleased to see a link to my profile of Olson, whose interviews were always a wild ride. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/b...

A living memorial vandalized.
The Kennedy Center installed President Trump’s name on its exterior, a dramatic change to a building established by law as a “living memorial” to a slain president. The signage follows a vote by the board of trustees to rename it “Trump Kennedy Center.” https://wapo.st/4qh6FVU

It's worth reading through the whole thing, not just these horrific excerpts. Most important: not a single person -- with the exception of a guy who says he'll turn on CNN if he's out of other options -- gets their news from actual journalists. It's all RW podcasts, YouTubers and TikTok.
From the right-wing Manhattan Institute's focus group of Gen Z conservatives -- just jaw-dropping stuff. We have a very sick society. www.city-journal.org/article/manh...

Renaming the Kennedy Center for Trump would be a sacrilege.

JFK was a martyred, historic US president whose name is synonymous with artistic excellence in America. The idea that Trump would put his name BEFORE Kennedy’s—or even alongside it—is obscene. The Kennedy Center should never be renamed.

There will come a time when people of good faith are empowered to uphold the law.

When that time comes, Illinois will have the testimony and records needed to pursue justice to its fullest extent.

The truth of what Trump and his masked agents are doing in Chicago will be told.
"They had done nothing wrong. They were not protesting. They were not chasing ICE vehicles. They were simply shopping."

Matt DeMateo recounts how three U.S. citizens, including a toddler, were tear gassed in Cicero by federal agents.

Just a tragedy.

My wife and I saw The Princess Bride at Milwaukee's Riverside Theatre this past September. Cary Elwes was there for a Behind the Scenes post-show Q&A. Shared many great stories about Rob Reiner, Andre the Giant, Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, etc.
Watched The Princess Bride, wonderful every single time

Exactly the sort of tyrannical behavior that the Constitution was written to prevent. See the Fourth Amendment in particular.
Armed ICE agents trapped US citizens in a restaurant and demanded their papers. Federal agents walked into East African restaurants in Cedar-Riverside, MN. They closed and blocked the doors. Then they demanded to see everyone’s papers. Every person present was a US citizen.

Fiddler on the roof, but with ICE agents playing the part of Cossacks. I know people think of Fiddler as a heartwarming story about a funny man doing Ya-ba-dibba-dibbas, but it's literally about pogroms like this
Masked men wearing ICE vests—but who refused to present a warrant or identify themselves—roped off a construction site, trapping two men on a roof for hours in subzero temps. Protesters gathered. Masked men eventually left, and one man on the roof was taken away by ambulance kstp.com/kstp-news/to...

This is a textbook case of political asylum.
In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

Sean Hecker, Kilmar's attorney, once hailed how much courage it took Kilmar to challenge what DOJ/DHS is doing to him. That stuck with me. Kilmar Abrego is just some guy, vulnerable in a way most of us are not.

But he has taken on Trump and ... thus far at least, prevailed.
"Today’s ruling is a powerful affirmation that the rule of law still matters," Sandoval-Moshenberg said. "The Court made … clear that the govt cannot detain a person indefinitely without legal authority, and that every agency involved must now comply fully and promptly with the Court’s directives."
Kilmar Abrego Garcia is released from ICE custody following judge's order
Judge Paula Xinis of the U.S. District Court in Maryland ruled that the Trump administration lacked the legal authority to continue holding Abrego.

What is wrong with people? This is a madman.
Left unchecked, they will bring back eugenics and slavery
TRUMP: “I said why is it we only take people from shithole countries? Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden, Denmark… But we always take people from Somalia— places that are filthy, dirty, disgusting.”

Such a mystery what he means when he says this stuff, isn’t it?

Pure insanity. We don’t have to be like this or accept it. Speak up, or be complicit.
Trump: "Ilhan Omar, whatever the hell her name is. With her little turban. I love her. She comes in, does nothing but bitch ... we ought to get her the hell out ... she's here illegally."

The crowd in Pennsylvania then starts chanting "send her back!"
