JUST OUT: "Boundaries and Cleavages: Elements of a Cultural Sociology of Political Divides."

OA: direct.mit.edu/ecps/article...

It develops what the cultural sociology of group formation can contribute to research on political cleavages.

(And why "Somewheres vs Anywheres" really doesn't cut it.)

Why you generally try not to politicize aid, or to concentrate its distribution in the hands of few people, example number one thousand or so

That says alot already, thanks!

Criticism of biased media coverage of Gaza is often discarded as baseless..

so we set out to study the coverage of Palestinian and Israeli victims by German press systematically!

The resulting study 'Hierarchies in Death' was just published #OA by Peacebuilding www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

If, however, they are indeed merely improving the infrastructure, this would show how little trust they enjoy due to past actions. You cannot claim access to schools will not be blocked for months, while it is happening, and expect alot of trust in later actions...

If the Taliban indeed want to block the internet, this is just PR. I doubt they aee benefit in permanent blockout, but even a temporary one would test (and signal) capacity to do so for possible later shutdowns.
teraqerat.bsky.social
In the past, Taliban communicated similarly about school bans for girls. No matter what happens: There is not exactly alot of trust in public statements, fuellung anxiety and gossip.

The social cost of losing contact with family, access to news and updates not even included here. And many girls who were not permitted to continue their education had relied on online classes - now a signal to them how this, too, can be taken away any time.
teraqerat.bsky.social
Unclear goals mirrored by very clear cost: Banking and directly affected, hitting those relying on trade and remittances. Small businesses and families with diaspora ties (both likely more urban and hence considered less of a support base) heavily affected.

Pretty terrifying news from Afghanistan: A total Internet shutdown, after slowing down in the preceding days. Alot of confusion on rationale: Is this about permanently breaking down access? About implementing new censorship tools? A test of repressive capacity?

I talked to @afp.com about Germany being under increasing pressure for its Israel policy. German responsibility "could be seen as the responsibility towards international law, the international rules-based order, the promise that genocide must never happen again."

Pressure grows on Germany over rigid support for Israel
Pressure is building on Germany to join steps to sanction Israel over the Gaza war, sparking heated debate in a country that has long been at pains to atone for the Holocaust.
