Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc.
Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

I'll keep saying this over & over - nobody got into shmups to play novice modes. They got into them because they saw Hibachi, Larsa, an Ikaruga double play or something like that. Devs gotta be confident & have a punk attitude & spend less time thinking about novices

Some modern STGs are conscious of possibly being anyone's first arcade scrolling shooter, and bend themselves into knots trying to be an entire genre tutorial before being their own identifiable game.

The thing that gets me is that they could make their synergyslop if they wanted to - having good genre fundamentals as a dev literally just makes the game better for EVERYONE from casual to hardcore, and doesn't stop you from being a sellout

Final Fight by default is very good at conveying this fantasy of you beating guys until they're down... multiple times over...
And then you watch a 1cc and the optimal strategy is to punch the air! Either while waiting for a guy to walk into your fist or to prevent the autocombo from working @_@
