Voted America's Finest Reply Guy 13 years running.
This site's fascination with Jesse Singal, who doesn't even post here anymore as far as I can tell, is sad and robs the site of interesting conversations.

Current least favorite word on the Internet: "slop".

I will not be taking questions at this time.

I suppose it's still better and the kids coming in with "We are pleased to report that after extensive evaluations you do rank slightly above the median dad. But you're well behind Ricky's dad, who's simply blowing you away."

I'd have to give long thought about finding a day care where the kids aren't spending the day summoning demons from the netherworld, but hey, if they're cheap enough ...
Thank you to my son and his day care for this terrifying Father’s Day gift.

This stuff never, I mean never, fails to fill me with awe. It makes me feel very lucky and very small at the same time.
wow.

we’re seeing these galaxies as they looked when the universe was only 6.5 billion years old, which is a little less than HALF its current age.

2025 is the year I bring back "I was driving and couldn't couldn't find a phonebooth" to explain why I didn't get back in touch with someone. Looking forward to it.
The atmosphere I try to create at all times is the scene from Miami Vice where Crockett and Tubbs are intensely driving (and stop at a payphone) as Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" plays.

By far not the biggest aspect of this whole deal, of course, but it pains me to see Signal get dragged through the mud as though it's some less-secure toy. By far the easiest way for people who aren't all on iPhones get maximal security on chats

The turning of "Web site" into a single word and along the way stripping "the Web" from its proper-noun glory will forever irritate me.

I feel the same way about "base ball".

P.S. I am not a crack pot

And you don't always have to live UNDER the rock. Sometimes you can get on top of it and look around! See other rocks! The sky, even!
I don’t understand why “living under a rock” is a pejorative. A nice rock? An entire rock to call my own? Wonderfully quiet AND always cold enough to sleep with a comforter on? A lovely little rock?

The Free World had best get along without America. Best of luck, fellas. We'll write when we settle back home from the nineteenth century.
The free world is going to meet in Paris, and America won’t be part of it.

Fantastic take.
Marco Rubio is like having Tom Wambsgabs as Secretary of State, a man whose ambition is to be an empty suit, on board to take any stance, say anything, whatever the boss wants, and sponge up some of the pain that comes back, all for the trappings, the title, the plane rides, the suits, to be there.

Preach.
Lots of "Very Serious People" don't want to admit what is plain and obvious and in front of our eyes and explains so much:

Donald Trump and Elon Musk are two of the most ignorant and uninformed people to ever be allowed near public office anywhere in the western world.

It's obvious to all of us.

I completely agree with @andycraig.bsky.social's take here. Personal liberties and free markets are under-defended nowadays, but it's impossible to take this at face value. WaPo will be about PL/FM only to the extent it aligns with Bezos's interests. It's the JeffPost now and forever will be.

Amen, brother.
it genuinely makes my blood boil how all these fuckers in the senate talk about the founders, the framers—they laud themselves as their rightful heirs. but when they're asked to put their political careers or their lives at risk to defend the constitution, they just surrender without a peep

Absolutely true. I also think it's interesting how each side has flipped on the rightful power of the federal government over the past thirty years.
i think also the primacy of national politics in political discourse has maybe led people to forget that governance is very decentralized and the federal government does not control the states and has limited enforcement power over them
